1.8T cutting out

I have a 2001 Golf 1.8T

Yesterday the car cut out whilst in motion, in doing so the steering seemed to freeze up(very scary).

It has been running a bit weird for a few weeks. I noticed that when I am slowing down and take the car out of gear when coming to a junction for example the revs bounce down to nearly 0 then up to 1000. I think this is what happened when it cut out.

When sitting idle it does not sound like it is running smoothly.

Any ideas what this might be?

I left it in the Garage this morning and am waiting to hear what they say, the guy did not seem to assuring when I was telling him what happened.

So just wondered if any of you guys have any ideas.

One of the first things to check when the car is running like this is the MAF sensor (a.k.a. the Air Mass Meter). This measures the volume of air coming into the engine from the air filter and contains some electronic sensors to do this.

First thing to try to check this is by removing the plug from the MAF sensor and seeing if the car still runs just as badly. If it does, the MAF sensor needs replacing.

Cost is circa £75 + VAT and a £25 returnable deposit (when you take your old one back) from your local VW main dealer.

I would say the steering freezing up is because the power steering pump is not running due to the fact the engine isn't running.

I would hazard a guess as this not being a problem at all.

The 1.8t engines have a common problem of the throttle bodys having a large build up of dirt and grime it the venturie in the throttle body which can cause problem such as you vehical is suffering from.

Sometimes you can get away with removing the throttle body and clean it, and Reset the throttle body (using VAG Diag machine)

But around 1 out of 4 need a new throttle body.

Also i have had a car with similar fault and it was a relay in position 4 on the relay plate 169144-ok.gif

Ok, got the car back from the garage, they said they could not reproduce the problem and the computer showed no error codes.

He also mentioned that from what I had said that it sounded like the throttle body, but he did not want to replace it without seeing the problem for himself, as throttle body’s cost a lot of money to replace. Is this true?

So I have been driving it and it hasn’t missed a beat, which is annoying as I want to get the problem sorted.

Could I rule out the MAF on this one as it is so intermittent?

Should I just bite the bullet and get the throttle body replaced. How much would I be looking at for this job?

Thanks guys for the help.

Picked the car up today, feels like a different car altogether. Ticks over perfect, doesn’t loose power.

The garage fitted a new throttle body, which seems to have done the trick.

It was expensive, but was worth it to have a normal running car again.
