gav123456 Posted September 21, 2005 Report Share Posted September 21, 2005 I have a 2001 Golf 1.8T Yesterday the car cut out whilst in motion, in doing so the steering seemed to freeze up(very scary). It has been running a bit weird for a few weeks. I noticed that when I am slowing down and take the car out of gear when coming to a junction for example the revs bounce down to nearly 0 then up to 1000. I think this is what happened when it cut out. When sitting idle it does not sound like it is running smoothly. Any ideas what this might be? I left it in the Garage this morning and am waiting to hear what they say, the guy did not seem to assuring when I was telling him what happened. So just wondered if any of you guys have any ideas. Mook Posted September 21, 2005 Report Share Posted September 21, 2005 Welcome to Tyresmoke Gav One of the first things to check when the car is running like this is the MAF sensor (a.k.a. the Air Mass Meter). This measures the volume of air coming into the engine from the air filter and contains some electronic sensors to do this. First thing to try to check this is by removing the plug from the MAF sensor and seeing if the car still runs just as badly. If it does, the MAF sensor needs replacing. Cost is circa £75 + VAT and a £25 returnable deposit (when you take your old one back) from your local VW main dealer. HTH Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

[/ QUOTE ] I would say the steering freezing up is because the power steering pump is not running due to the fact the engine isn't running. I would hazard a guess as this not being a problem at all. IF you lost steering then it would suggest to me you lost all power, not just a lack of power - so for some reason the engine cut out - faulty earth strap? mulkbear Posted September 21, 2005 Report Share Posted September 21, 2005 The 1.8t engines have a common problem of the throttle bodys having a large build up of dirt and grime it the venturie in the throttle body which can cause problem such as you vehical is suffering from. Sometimes you can get away with removing the throttle body and clean it, and Reset the throttle body (using VAG Diag machine) But around 1 out of 4 need a new throttle body. gav123456 Posted September 23, 2005 Author Report Share Posted September 23, 2005 Ok, got the car back from the garage, they said they could not reproduce the problem and the computer showed no error codes. He also mentioned that from what I had said that it sounded like the throttle body, but he did not want to replace it without seeing the problem for himself, as throttle body’s cost a lot of money to replace. Is this true? So I have been driving it and it hasn’t missed a beat, which is annoying as I want to get the problem sorted. Could I rule out the MAF on this one as it is so intermittent? Should I just bite the bullet and get the throttle body replaced. How much would I be looking at for this job? So many questions, thanks guys for helping out. mulkbear Posted September 24, 2005 Report Share Posted September 24, 2005 I would NOT change the trottle body as it is a very very exspenvie part, i would just drive the car until it has the fault on it all the time, it could be down to poor fuel that has cause the problem and all the poor fuel has been used ! gav123456 Posted September 29, 2005 Author Report Share Posted September 29, 2005 Thanks guys for the help. Picked the car up today, feels like a different car altogether. Ticks over perfect, doesn’t loose power. The garage fitted a new throttle body, which seems to have done the trick. It was expensive, but was worth it to have a normal running car again.
