Im debating buying a new car. I want to keep it Audi, but not sure what to get??Im torn between the S4 AND S3. Cost wise the S3 is winning me over, as its still only a 1.8 at end of day, were as i can see the S4 being a bit hungry on fuel. Im just looking for some personal opinions, which is better and which is most reliable. Also things i should look out for when purchasing either cars.

Bout 10k. There's only bout a second in 0-60mph though isnt there?I have a A4 1.8T at mo running 210bhp (well was, see previous post) and thats pretty quick, i reakon it would keep up with a S3, as its only FWD. But its tuning possibilitys. A re-map on a S3 would give me at least 250bhp. The S4 is abit of a daddy, but i can see it being high maintanence. Im on 23, so Insurance is still in the clouds to.

Apparently Audi get alot of S4's back that have blown turbo's after bing tuned?

Maybe, but the real problem is owners gunning them from cold and switching them straight off when hot. The B5 S4 and RS4 seriously object to this - trashing the turbos will blow them whatever the output! My best mate just sold his S2 after 12.5 years and 112k and it was still on the original turbo despite a rather insane figure curve courtesy of AmD. Christ, my dad even lets his tractor tick for 30 seconds after a run....

Many S4s will have started life as exec' company cars, hence 'owners' don't pay the bills for bits they break - although replacement parts will be OE at least. Finding a properly maintained, well treated B5 S4 on a budget of 10k is possible, but not as easy as with 13k. Condition is argueably more important than spec - for example, adding sat nav is a fraction of the cost of replacing the turbos: seem to recall a figure of around £2000 from posts on RS246 in terms of 'prevention'. The bill for 'cure' - if they break up and get sucked into the engine - doesn't bear thinking about: Tuned RS4 owner Bushy openly spent 12k rebuilding his 2.7 V6....
