chrissheldon
Hi all, a couple of days ago my passat 97 20V turbo started to lose power on a short journey, at the time i thought nothing of it. the next day i started to hear strange grinding noises coming from the engine, my immediate thought was the turbo, this lasted only a day, then when doing the school run i covered a multitude of cars in residue from my engine oil. is this common on a turbo that has only done 105000 miles ? how much will a new or second hand turbo cost. ? Are they difficult to fit ? Has anyone got a spare they can sell me ? /i hope some one can help, today i was quoted £750 all in, the cars only worth about 2K.!!! pritesh
it all really depends on how the car has been cared for really over the years? after driving the car do you let the car idle to cool and let the oil rec-circulate? (a turbo timer would do this) ....not estential but does help in the long run. as for gettin a new turbo i would suggest hunting around on the web. if you know what your doing it is a possible to do it ur self. but me personally i would get to to a techy so its done proper. Best of luck mate.
9969
Hi Thanks for the info about letting the engine idle and cool But what's a turbo timer ?
pritesh
its an electronic device that is wired into ur engine...mainly used on motors running high boost and power but can still be used on any turbo charged motor...u can set it so that the engine idles and turns off after u have walked away from the car... as i sed mainly used by cars running serious levels of boost as they require proper cooling. ....might i recomend talking to AMD technik! they will be able to advise you on ur turbo problem

karlosthejackal
Hi, do all turbo'd cars need to be left to cool down like this, including diesels?

karlosthejackal
How long are you supposed to let the car idle? does it depend on how long the car has been running?
Rustynuts
If you live in a 30 mph area, a steady drive for the last mile home will cool it down enough, and keep you in the good books with the neighbours.
pritesh
Yes technically the coppers can do u for leaving ur car running unattended...i guess its a risk. failing that as already mentioned on returning home about a mile or two before gettin home drive steady so the turbo can cool down. mulkbear
But can the copper prove that the car is running ?
Wobby
He can when he pulls you up and says "step out of the car please sir". Then you get out and leave the engine running!! Then he gives you a lecture on the fact that he can prosecute you for leaving the car with the engine running! Hes was being a pain, i gave him plenty back though, about catching "real criminals" not soft targets with a number plate light out.

I nice policeman who pulled me up reckoned he could prosecute me for getting out of the car to him and leaving the engine running!! Yes, he was nice [/ QUOTE ] Yes, it's illegal to leave the car unattended with the engine running but on this occassion you were acting on the policeman's instruction so (unless he told you to switch the engine off before exiting the car) he would not be able to report you. As to prosecution - that's not his decision. So, all in all, he was wrong on two counts.
