pugboy
Hello all. First post I've started on here. Bought a 2001 Passat for the wife last weekend at auction. Unfortunately neither key fob works. The button lights up on both of them so I'd guess that batteries are ok? I have tried reprogramming as per the owners manual, but that made no odds. I get the impression that this is a common problem so fingers crossed you guys can help. Thanks in advance. Adam.

pugboy
I have tried the taking one of the keys apart to make sure nothing was obviously broken. I will see how many volts its putting out. I read on the Seat forum that if you replace the single battery for two slimmer ones it works better..... mcnalu
Adam - if the keys never work, perhaps the keys need to be sync'ed with the car? The instructions are in the manual and it is very easy to do. I think you press and hold the lock or unlock button for a second or so, then insert key into the driver's door lock then press the lock and unlock button again. The keys will be desync'ed if pressed too many times away from the car. Another possibility - especially if the key fob works occasionallly - is one of the Passat's many electrical frailties - solder joint cracking inside the driver's door. The fix for that is described here (I'm planning to try it on my car soon): http://www.taligentx.com/passat/maintenance/doorlockmechanism/
