ESP intruding all the time ?. Does yours ?.

I have a 2000 A8 4.2 Facelift. One thing that recently has started to annoy me is the ESP intruding. If I accelerate (not flat out) from say 20mph to 40mph, the ESP kicks in. It kicks in as expected when turning right pulling out of side junctions. But is driving me mad. I recently put Goodyear Eagle tyres on the car which are much grippier, but wouldn't have thought this would affect it. Thoughts ?

Thanks, just confirming what I thought. I've replaced the front wheel ABS sensors previously, as the ABS light came on sometimes when turning left or right. I believe there are more ABS/ESP sensors in the steering column on the face lift A8.

I'll take to the dealers, or maybe I'll trade it in for a Phaeton W12, which are ridiculously cheap in the UK at the moment. They can't drink much more petrol than a 4.2. (That's what I tell the wife)

Nice motors! Especially at that price. The dealers will be overjoyed to see you and do a deal. 169144-ok.gif

Swap the '8 for a Volkswagen??? EEK2.GIFEEK2.GIFEEK2.GIF

Seriously, I had a sit in a Phaeton at MPH04 and thought that the interior wasn't a patch on my A8. Too plasticky. And now they've facelifted the Passat (and shortly Bora) it just looks like a bigger one of those. Flush.gif there goes some more secondhand value.

Hang on, haven't they done the same thing with the new A8 and A6, especially now they both have that daft grill? Oh dear. ROLLEY~14.GIF

Hmm...if the '8 is anything like the lesser models then I imagine you would get an ESP light on the dash indicating a problem. The smaller audis have Lateral Acceleration and Steering Angle sensors which, it has to be said, are prone to failing. However, these indicate when they're playing up with the aforementioned ESP light.

I'd try and work out if you're genuinley losing traction or whether its being too sensitive. Perhaps turn around and drive back over the same patch of road in the same way with the ESP turned off and see if you're really braking traction?

Also, the ESP system tends to be ridiculously sensitive over potholes - as, if you think about it, one wheen is briefly catching air and spinning faster than the others....

It's fixed.

Took it to the dealers and it turns out it was a faulty brake light switch. (Cost £10). The ESP evidently thought the car was braking, which kind of explains why sometimes the Cruise Control wouldn't hold. I guess it's logical the ESP must hook up to all kinds of sensors in the car. This was the fault in VAG-COM

  • 1 month later...

It definitely fixed the problem, but then last Saturday, I test drove a year old D3 A8 4.2 L, and by Monday my old one was part exchanged and the new one was on my drive.

Don't know how that happenend, but there you go impulse buying for you.

There's not much wrong with the old A8, but the new one is definitely a better car to drive. I'll post pictures of the my extra long beast if anyone's interested.
