Volvo are actually not keen on the NCAP results, as they say that designers only design cars to pass the tests that NCAP do, rather then doing overall safety i.e. roll over tests, side on crashes.

They wasn't too happy about someone having thier car moved from a 4 star rating to a 5 star, just because they put on a seat belt warning light.

Yes the current MB W203 C Classe went from 4 to 5 stars by the addition of an airbag warning sticker.

And yes NCAP does encourage manufacturers to engineer there cars in such a way as to perform well NCAP tests (stand up Renault). Even so NCAP has had a very positive effect on safety as it has thrown the public spotlight onto the issue.

Incedently, the 5 series has an aluminium front structure (bonnet, wings, chassis legs etc) bonded to the rest of the steel car. This is were the structural instability problems stem from. They resubmitted the 5 series with some stratigic strengthening, which is fine if you have an accident that mimics the NCAP test.

A2, A6, RS4: no problem. A3, A4: you gotta log in. WTF ?

Is this something to do with then people left to come here - were A3/S3/A4/S4 owners the chief breakaway faction or something ?
