cruiser647
Ooops. However, that won't stop people buying it. If I really wanted it, I would still buy one (if I had the means). I don't buy cars because they are Safe. I don't think other people in the market for it would NOT buy it because of it's 3 star rating.

NeilB
The only time you tend to worry about the NCAP results is when your hurtling towards a tree at speed.
jimdiesel
Not true when you have a little person to consider. The NCAP result did figure when I rejected the 5 series over the A6.
Riz
Mmmmmmmm M5 will do 205mph! NCAP wont do much good then will it? Vrooooooome V10! Power! Riz
CarMad
The early 5 series did even worse than this. BMW have since made changes to improve things but when they first tested it it did quite badly. I can't remember what it is that they did, but its not good for BMW even if NCAP isn't really meant to be a true real world test.
Chav
Isn't one of the stars for pedestrians if the car hits them anyway? Or am I being a bit selfish there!
CarMad
Nope.. there is a 5 star rating for pedestrian safetly that is seperate to it. BMW use more advanced IT to build its cars than most, but it would appear that there is a fundermental problem with the super structure of the car. NeilB
Volvo are actually not keen on the NCAP results, as they say that designers only design cars to pass the tests that NCAP do, rather then doing overall safety i.e. roll over tests, side on crashes. They wasn't too happy about someone having thier car moved from a 4 star rating to a 5 star, just because they put on a seat belt warning light. jimdiesel
Yes the current MB W203 C Classe went from 4 to 5 stars by the addition of an airbag warning sticker. And yes NCAP does encourage manufacturers to engineer there cars in such a way as to perform well NCAP tests (stand up Renault). Even so NCAP has had a very positive effect on safety as it has thrown the public spotlight onto the issue. Incedently, the 5 series has an aluminium front structure (bonnet, wings, chassis legs etc) bonded to the rest of the steel car. This is were the structural instability problems stem from. They resubmitted the 5 series with some stratigic strengthening, which is fine if you have an accident that mimics the NCAP test.
GCab
What an odd forum audi-sport is. Seems to have been deliberately engineered to exclude anyone with an A3 or A4, while listing pretty much every other Audi (even A2s and A6s...). GCab
Eh? Did wonder if that was the case but what on earth sort of forum makes you register for some cars but not others ? A2, A6, RS4: no problem. A3, A4: you gotta log in. WTF ? Is this something to do with then people left to come here - were A3/S3/A4/S4 owners the chief breakaway faction or something ?
