Milo
Is there anyway I can check what is the maximum broadband speed my line/local exchange will support? I am currently with Wanadoo (1Mb) and they are offering to upgrade me to 2Mb but the cheeky sods want a £20 admin charge. I will pay it if I have to but not if I can't get 2Mb where I live. I pointed out BT upgrade people for free but it fell on deaf ears

Milo
Cheers Sparky [ QUOTE ] Our initial test on your line indicates that you may be able to have an ADSL broadband service that provides 1Mbps, 512Kbps or 256Kbps download speed. However due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service. [/ QUOTE ] Looks like I'm sticking with 1Mb

Sparky
[ QUOTE ] most exchanges can cope with 2mb [/ QUOTE ] Sadly, this isn't the case. There are still many of them that only get 1mb. Plus.net emailed me to offer me 4MB and 8MB lines, but looking at our exchange, "we currently have no plans to offer faster broadband speeds than 2MB"

Frodo
Check out www.samknows.com. It is not just the Exchange but your distance. Do you have a current ADSL connection through a router / modem can you get the attenuation figure?
Riz
Mmmmm well ive downloaded a 500mb + file and it was downloading at a constant of 5.2mbps. Sparky
Have you run a speed test? I had a mate who was on a 2MB package, until he re-read that it was called "Upto 2MB", and he was only getting 1.1MB)
Philbes
Just tried the BT test with a dozen numbers around the country and got results of max. of 512K, 1Mb and 2Mb - none above 2Mb. Does the BT test ever report a result above 2MB?

Milo
That's interesting. I wonder if I could get a faster connection than 1Mb if I did sign up for the 2Mb service? It might be worth paying the £20 admin fee to mind out; even if it's not faster, I would would benefit from any upgrade of the exchange as soon as it happened I suppose (up to 2Mb anyway). Frodo - I only live about a mile and a half from my exchange, does this have any effect?
baggy
I don't know if this helps, but I live about a mile and a half from my exchange too, so I guess if your exchange can support 2Mb there's a good chance you can get it.
Frodo
Milo you should be fine but that is no guarntee. BT are very strict about the attenuation and noise figures for a 2MB line. A 1MB line has far less restrictions. Check out the SamKnows website it is very good and should answer all your questions
Milo
I had a look at that site last night Frodo but a lot of the info just baffled me! The BT site said my local exchange was 1Mb however I have just found a link on www.samknows.com and it says I can receive up to 2Mb ADSL (I am using a modem by the way). I think I'll pay the £20 and see what happens
Milo
That is a good site by the way - apparently I live 1.79 km from the exchange
MOSE
Is there a good oine broadband speed test. All that I have used so far have said that my connection is shyte. ISP say there isnt anything wrong with it and BT say there is nothing wrong with the connection/line. And I am still getting shyte download speeds of something like 6bps. PATHETIC! Milo
Just went to upgrade to 2Mb - Wanadoo say I am on the fastest speed supported by my line (1Mb) and I can't upgrade If I had tried that yesterday I could have saved myself a lot of bother
