mooret
Maybe I am a deluded fool, but so far I am not too impressed with the wifes new runaround. Now i know a 320d (E46) is not going to pull like the R32 did but it seems down on power compared to the company golf I am currently running around in. The golf is an old 110bhp tdi and seems to have much more punch than the BMW. Also more of a concern is the fuel consumption. The R32 had a combined mpg figure of about 28mpg and the wife used get about 26 on her run to work and back. The Beemer has a combined of 49point something and is delivering 35!!!! What does anyone else with a 320d get? Is 35 all I can expect?
NewNiceMrMe
My wife has an E46 320d SE on a 54 plate. I'm not sure why the power should feel down when compared to the Golf you have though because that is something I've never had any complaints about. The car is noticeably quicker than my A4 Avant TDi (130) Sport (I can say that easily now that I have had the A4 a month and plenty of time to test it). The fuel consumption is interesting though. On long runs the 320d returns about 41-42mpg. However, when my wife spends a week or two of just going in and out of the office (commuter and city type runs) then that drops to about 38-39mpg. 35 is low though - too low. The A4 compensates for it's lesser power with a quite stunning mpg return. I'm getting 650 miles out of a tank at the moment and on my weekly runs home it's showing 47-48 mpg! I'd be tempted to get the car checked over. When was it last serviced? With it's 150bhp it might not 'feel' as quick as the Golf because of the size difference of course, but in a straight line I'd be pretty sure it'd pull away quite easily. I commented on here a few days ago that a 320d visibily pulled away from me in the A4 TDi recently - and I was thrashing my car to death to try to keep up, but couldn't. mooret
Thanks MrMe, Due for a service in 2000 miles. As it has the service pack the dealer didn't carry out this service! Will pay close attention and keep you posted.
gizze
There is a problem there, the 150bhp 320d is considerably faster than the VW/Audi 1.9tdi 130, let alone the 110bhp engine, I have owned them all. In fact the 2.5tdi vw/audi engine is a fairer comparison to the BMW engine. MPG? Is it an auto?? I got 33mpg out of our 320d auto touring over 12 months and 25k miles, I am getting 38mpg out of the current A6 1.9tdi auto avant and that is a considerably heavier car. I used to get 42+ from our A4 110bhp avant in manual form and got 46mpg from a 320d maunal I borrowed when mine was in for a service.
mooret
No not an auto and the average is now down to 33! Take back what I said about the performance, the Golf wouldn't know which way it went!
gizze
What sort of driving does she do? I would expect mid to low 30's if it is all short journeys or stop/start driving. Around 42ish crusing at 80ish and maybe 50+ if crusing around 55mph.
mooret
Sorry, been away! A mixture of 10 miles motorway, 8 miles A road and 4 miles bumper to bumper each way.
