Coutz
Hi I have a 2003 Cooper S and have a reoccuring stering knock / grind at low speed and when parking. I've had the steering column replaced three times on warranty but my friendly service manager has now left my dealer and the new one is won't take my word for it that it is doing it again. The problem is it never seems to do it when a mechanic takes it for a run. Has any one else had a similar problem?
zerocool
there was an issue on minis where the pinch bolt on the u/j that connects to the rack, was hitting the subframe, causing the noise you describe.there is a technical bulletin on this. they might have only replaced the top part of the steering columnand not the shaft that goes onto the rack
ncr666
Steering grinding must be catching, my Audi A3 has got the same problem. Had 2 replacement racks and the problem has reoccured, car is only 9 months old. Traded my Cooper S in for the A3 last July.
