SeanL
Hi all, I'm curious to get feedback about the value of my car, what it's 'worth' or could get for it? (taking for granted nice condition)It is: A6 Quattro Sport 4.2 40v 2000 'X' Tiptronic, metallic black, cream leather recaro embossed f&r, black carpets, 5" tv/sat nav, roof mounted dvd, bose stereo, 6 disc changer, sunroof (moonroof), 3 spoke steering wheel with shift controls, xenon lamps, cruise, 76k 3 owners. My thoughts are that people quote from books who do not allow for rarity or options fitted. I looked on ebay & autotrader & couldn't find a single one of these? are they good or bad? advice/help required
DanRS
There are 3 currently for sale on Pistonheads.com all 1999 cars, from 9k to 11.5k all look well speced with between 50k and 83k miles. I think you are right about people quoting from books... the best way to get an idea of value is to look at other similar cars for sale. It goes without saying however the advertised price is very rarely the actual sale price Hope this helps XFS
Ian_C
Around 9995-10995 if it's a saloon, maybe a little more for an Avant. Depressing, isn't it. Ian
SeanL
I had a look at the ones on piston heads, only one seems to have the same interior, (smooth seat base, embossed recaro) will try mine at 11695 i think as its a bit newer & black metallic with cream seats, it has a tracker (navtrak) fitted too, i just found out (750.00!). the wheels also are a flat style 5 spoke, does anyone know if these are an extra over the multispoke ones i've seen? Cheers.
gmarks1
If this is the car you're referring to: .....it's mine! There have been some interesting threads on various forums about why these cars aren't selling. Principle issues seem to be fuel economy given the current cost of unleaded, and the ongoing cost of maintenance especially if you continue to use an Audi main dealer. My car has a tracker fitted as well - along with every other option available apart from the Competition alloys - which were a cost option (and very nice too!) It has only one previous owner and has a complete folder of receipts and history. People who purchase a car like this will research them well - if your car has not had the 80,000 cambelt change, this will affect the value - mine was done as part of an 80,000 mile service which cost around £2,000. These were £50,000 new, and are big complicated cars - so although it costs less than a Mondeo 1.8LX - it will have the running costs of a £50K performance saloon. The fact remains that they are stunning cars, with amazing effortless performance and stability. It is true these cars are not common, but the optional extras fitted rarely make any significant difference to the second hand value of a car. Also, people will tend to be looking for an S6 if they want something like this - the S6 does seem to hold its value better and be easier to sell (a stunning example recently sold on Pistonheads) I've decided to keep mine - am looking out for a set of RS6 alloys, and a Milltek exhaust - then I'll simply enjoy the car and pretend I've spent £60K on an RS6! Good-luck selling yours! Gary
SeanL
Hi Gary, yes it is! Nice! why are your seats (& mine) different? are the wheels you mention, the ones i've got? clearly i know bugger all about these cars, only just bought this, had to make very fast decision, and now dealing with my choice. Your history is better than mine, although a guy i work with, knows others in the dealership where mine was serviced & got some printouts. not 5 yrs old yet and had a radiator, two oxy sensors, n/s/f window reg, wiring fault on fogs, air mass, funny you mention mondeo 1.8lx - thats my other car! I've always worked on my own cars, looked up timing belt change on this, expecting a few pages... ha ha....34 pages! if i start now, it'll be done in March. gmarks1
Hi - the polished 5 spoke competition alloys were an optional extra - so these are probably the ones that you have (this was the only factory fit option), as were the Recaro Sports seats; these were a very expensive option, so not many cars had them fitted. A fully spec'd A6 4.2 Sport Quattro has similar equipment to the S6 which followed it, apart from 40bhp less, aluminium door mirrors etc. My cambelt was in very poor condition at 77,000 miles when it was changed - I think 80,000 miles is optimistic, although this is what Audi recommend - it is essential that all the tensioners, followers and water-pump are changed at the same time. Air mass meters seem to be a common problem - mine is at the garage at the moment potentially suffering from this problem. Mine's had a few gremlins as well - electric window mechanism failed (double-glazed), electric seat motor failed, but otherwise OK. I have the original sales brochure for this model which includes a page on optional extras - if your interested I can scan a copy and e:mail it to you - just pm me your e:mail address. So, not the cheapest to run, but fantastic cars - the A6 is my wifes car, but it's got very simliar performance to my manual BMW 330Ci, which is impressive for a big automatic car, and it's absolutely effortless. Whilst its keeping me poor, I enjoy the car so much, so I just don't want to sell it!
SeanL
Cheers Gary, don't know how to pm you, yes i read that all the pulleys have to be swapped, also the thermostat which is behind the pump? i just need to find the tools and the right frame of mind to tackle it....perhaps. brochure would be cool, nice too see what they had to rave about when 1st sold. what had happenned to your belt? did they show you it or tell you it was knackered? gmarks1
Didn't see it, but was told there was a lot of movement being picked up by the tensioners, cracks and wear on the belt etc. If you click on my username gmarks1 by my post, you can select send private mail and let me know your e:mail address - If the file's not too big I can e:mail to you the text sections - the brochure was dedicated to the A6 4.2 Sport Quattro - quite good if you're interested in the history of the car - obviously at the time there was no S6 or RS6, so this was THE ONE to have! shao_khan
Not sure if it is of interest but I have the smaller 2.8 30v audi engine (in a passat V6) and apparently VW have recently changed cam belt changes from 80k miles to 4yr or 80k miles whichever is sooner, so perhaps the 80k is optimistic. shao_khan
Saw someone looking for a 4.2 a6 on asn: "I'm looking for an A6 4.2 Quattro. If anyone has one they'd like to sell contact me by mail on [email protected]" just in case you are thinking of selling.
Edd_W
Try looking at audiworld.com - there are vastly lot more 4.2's in the US and there are write-ups on cam belt chnage and every other imaginable problem dealt with. Sounds a nice car. I kept my 2.8q for my wife to use just because it wsa so nice I could not part with it. It has to go now because my wife wanted a Golf. She still loves the A6 but it is just not the car for the school run and those times you just want to nip out for a take-away!
