Sat Nav - Which portable system?

Recommended Posts

I've just bought a TomTom GO 700 and so far it's been perfect. Last month I drove down to a friend's place in Autun in France (a.k.a the middle of nowhere) and I got virtually all the way to his front door without consulting a map once (which is just as well as I didn't actually have a map!)

Whilst there we went out and about in the surrounding hills, and at one point my mate's local knowledge failed him and we ended up lost, on scary single track roads which seemed to go on for ever. Thanks to the GO we easily found our way back to the town. 169144-ok.gif

I've got TomTom Bluetooth Navigator 5 for Palm.

Very good system really, although I occasionally have problems getting the Palm to initially pick up the bluetooth GPS device. Once running though it's generally great, although it did miss warning me of a turn-off in Nottingham last weekend, but all Sat-Nav systems suffer from that sort of issue if the maps aren't quite right.

Agree with the others about the Tom Tom 700, great bit of kit and i love the way it intergrates with my phone.

Only gripe i have is that it sometimes tellsme to turn into a one way street against the flow!!

Still trying to put the camera sites on it though confused.gif

Helfinger,

Any chance of a review on the Snooper Indago. I am considering buying a tomtom 700 but like the look of the Indago but so far there are no reviews available and I dont want to spend that sort of money before seeing some opinions on how it performs etc.

After the abortive attempt with with the abysmal Road Angel Navigator, I'm also considering the TT 700 - I had a play with one in a shop the other day, and the user interface seemed reasonably good. What I couldn't determine on the TT 700, because there was no GPS signal in the shop, was whether the map is displayed north-up or heading-up.

It certainly proved that the TT would start up and do useful things in the absence of a GPS signal - the RA definitely won't.

However, I could certainly be tempted by the Indago.

The Mrs bought a Tom Tom Go 500 for our trip to Florida in Sept and I've got to say I made the driving sooooooooo easy. It works fine over here too and has Bluetooth - all in all 169144-ok.gif

I can't see the point in OEM sat Nav for the average Joe Bloggs when these portables are so good.

P.s You can choose how you want the map displayed 169144-ok.gif

The reviews on the Road Angel Navigator suggest that it is crap although I have not seen or used it so cant confirm this but going by the reviews I would go for the tomtom. I was going to go for the tomtom 700 but I am going to wait a while and see if the Snooper Indago might be the better option. On paper it looks good but no reviews as of yet.
