When do you think you will retire?

  1. 1. When do you think you will retire?

Quite a weak pole tbh.

Who on TSN has driven all three?

Until I have I don't feel I can vote accurately!

Anyone that's got the Golf will vote that way,the same with the A3,when in reality the Astra might blow the others away.

I'm not saying that's the case,but it's possible!

I don't think hat is the point. The question asked is out of the three, which would you choose on cover value.

I chose the Gti.

This is the most VW/Audi biased website on the 'net so hardly suprising.

I agree with you Matt but I'd still vote for the Golf. The Astra is just far too Chav-ish IMO. I know I said in my review that I'd not buy a Golf GTI....but I'd buy one before I bought an Astra VXR.

So DK, (and everyone on here more or less), define "STYLE" then?

The Audi and Golf are easy to miss, the VXR has a totally unique and ground breaking shape that's been universally lauded.

And the interior is probably better than the VWs but maybe no quite as good as the Audis.

Not saying I prefer the VXR but this "class" and "style" thing is a bit 90s yer know.

Given the choice of those, if by some bizarre freak that was my choice for company car or something, I'd go for the Golf. It's a good car, and (according to reviews etc) a genuine return to form for the GTi after the awfully dull Mk 4. I'm not a fan of the Astra, too boy racer-ish for me, and although the A3 2.0T might be the subtle option let's be honest - it's a 1 series with an Audi badge on it.

Hi, just found this link.

Its a no brainer. The Astra is a lads car that will lose loads money in its first few years, the Audi is a car for taking the kids to work/for retired people and is boring. Only one choise - thats why I went for it! Top Gear also reviewed them all recently and went for the Golf - the Astra apparently handles like a pig.

So the Audi and VW don't depreciate then?

Genius!

The GTi is a nice car but let's not resort to childishness and name calling just because we got a Golf eh?

It's not a no brainer, it's called TASTE.

Autocar reviewed the VXR and it comprehensively whipped the GTis butt - All depends on opinion.

Not in this but as Matt says I'd go for the Focus St. Will probably out handle them all, will certainly out spec them for the money from what I have seen and that engine.. well, I'm hearing 5 cylinder warble at full chat down a country lane. That noise will beat any GTI or VXT any day of the week. tongue.gif

Is a personal thing I know, but I prefer subtle styling, not the "in your face" look of the new Astra. I know the performance and price etc etc are all good on the Astra, but I'm a Q-car man if you get my drift....

Sorry if I upset you.

Simply trying to state that the Astra is a vauxhall and will depreciate like mad while the Audi and VW will hold their value much better. Audi a very nice car and my second choice but too many in Bristol driven by mums and old people - your should know this if you ever come to this big smoke.

Well my R32 got so much of the wrong attention in Clifton, that I had to sell it!

Now in a "safe" place but I'm looking more and more seriously at the Focus tbh.

I'm not some pro Vauxhall muppet - Apart from the new Astra. Monaro, VX220T and Movano van, I really don't like them but what I have learned (and preached on here many times) is to stop being so blinkered and assume German is instantly superior.

My experience of looking to replace the R showed most German cars to be nicely made on the surface but poor handlers with silly prices - I'll spend £££s if it's justified but I don't feel it is nowadays with many cars.

As for depreciation - I have had three Golfs, all high enders. All have depreciated like a rock off a cliff.

To buy a car relying on it "possibly" not depreciating it utter madness - If no one wants your car when you go to sell it, it's worth feck all.

If it's popular, it's worth a lot more.

Much as BMW/VW/Audi try to persuade us that their cars are vastly superior and depreciation proof, many are learning to open their eyes.

My only rule now - Avoid French cars.
