Vman
Hi I am new to this web site and am thinking of getting the GTI Golf. I have posted the coments below on the site that I normally use and thought they might be of interest. I currently own a GSI Turbo Astra 03plate. Got the Golf GTI (dsg) demo today, picked it up about 3pm this afternoon. Spend most of the day driving round with it in D. Finally got use to it to start using the paddle shifts properly and all I can say is this is an awesome car to drive, its just so much fun. I can see why the media really do rave about it. The car changes gear so fast, and before you know it your breaking the speed limit, its so quick. I wanted a VXR Astra until I drove this car, now I don't know, I know I have not driven the VXR, but its got to be good to be better than the GTI. The car handles really well, I only had one moment when I pushed it a little to hard, felt like it was on 3 wheels!! But still kept it on the road just. I will try and take some pic's of it tomorrow, its white, got 18s and one thing that I thought was good was the anti-dazzle mirror's, had matey in his van trying to push me a long and all I got in the rear mirror was a green hazz from his headlights. And the best part of owning a Golf, the blue dial's, they look so cool, its worth buying one just for that alone. I have priced the car with the options that I want, DSG gearbox, xenon, satnav, electric folding/anti dazzle mirrors, sunroof and its coming in at £25k for a Golf, alot of money I know, but I will probably keep it for 5 years. I know it does not have the looks of the VXR and to be honest just blends in to a point with all the other cars. But I can now see what people who have driven the car rave on about. And no I don't work for VW I actually work for Vauxhall Motors. If anybody is getting a VXR or spending 20k+ don't test drive this car like I have done, I only took a test drive because my girlfriend said try it!! Don't listen to women they know too much!! Because I am hooked on this GTI and its going to cost me more now.
Vman
Forgot to mention the only thing that annoyed me was when I was using the paddle shift, I found it very hard to see what gear the car was in due to the numbers on the display being so small! Is there an option you can get that displays bigger numbers, I have people talk about the highline display is this it?
silentandy
Would be interested to hear your thoughts on the VXR when you get to test drive one. Welcome to the TSN though, by the sounds of it you are already convinced by the GTI, but if you start spending time on here you'll end up obsessed
skifly
think if you spec the highline you get more info - sure red will be along soon as he seems to be the TSN DSG Guru at the mo...
silentandy
This is what the highline looks like: ...although I don't have DSG so that's probably no help at all.
Simonl
You don't have to know what gear your in, that's the beauty of it! just up or down shift accordingly

silentandy
..and the DSG is intelligent enough (quote "idiot proof" by a dealer) not to drop down a gear if the revs will be too high.

RedRobin
Welcome Vman! I had the same criticism about not having a large enough gear readout in the DSG version. My solution has been to change the exhaust system to a slightly louder one. I always have driven using the engine sound as a driving aid - Probably because I have driven many cars without rev counters!

spankit
Find that a quick glance at the rev counter tells you if you should shift up, or shift down. Only look at the gear number on the computer when in drive.
Vman
Took it back today, was late getting it back to the sales guy, he was standing in the street waiting for me as they had locked the dealership up!! Did not want to give it back to be honest. I did 370miles in from 3pm Saturday to 5.30pm Sunday, been all over North Wales, all I can say is I have never seen so many speed camera's and signs everywhere in my life. I still want one and going to talk with dealers soon. As for the display being to small, I take it the highline is no different in size. I did try listening to the engine, but kept having to turn the stereo down to hear it. Got a lot of looks in it, probably down to the car being WHITE! Solution to both problems is to get Milltek exhausts because you can't always drive by looking at the rev counter. Check the Milltek thread (the reeeeeally long one!) where I have posted decibel comparisons for loudness. You're now hooked on that Gee-Tee-Eye-Candy!! OzGTI
Vman, You do get used to the feel of the car with DSG. I was worried about the gear display when I first got mine. Now about 1,500 miles later and I don't even look at the display. Clearly, as Red suggests you could get Millteks but with or without an ungraded exhaust system you'll get the feel of car pretty quickly.
Vman
RedRobin I noticed on your signature that your GTI has got Xenons, what do you think to them? Do you get lots of people flashing you with them being so bright, people think that your flashhing them when you go over bumps etc..? Also notice that the rear view mirror sort of dimmed at night when cars where behind me, not once got glare off this, is this standard as I can see nothing in the brochure regarding dimming rear view mirror, just wing mirror option? Thanks for the info guys.
GTiMK5
Dimming rear view mirror is standard on the GTI and most other mark 5 golfs.
RedRobin
Hi Vman, I very rarely get people flashing me over my Xenons - Perhaps they are properly set up. I anyway wear amber yellow tinted shades at night (prescription) and this cuts any glare to me but doesn't reduce visibility. Police use them too I think. People can think you are flashing them when yo go over bumps regardless of headlight type but most intelligent drivers register you on a bump. I strongly recommend them if you drive in the countryside a lot or long journeys. Their illumination is fantastic especially on dip - Very bright up to about 5ft high like a hedge. Rear view mirror can be switched on or off to dim. It's very good but you have to get used to it so you don't miss seeing someone.

RedRobin
"somefing dat goes hard"? - Gotta be either the GTI or R32. You need either £25K or £30K to include a good share of the extra options.
