Money or GTI???

Ordered my GTI in May, picked it up in Aug, bring it back for service in Sept since some noise from gear box and they told me a NEW GEARBOX need to be replaced. Made a complaint to VW and after one month, someone from VW contact me and leave me these options:

1. They going to buy the GTI back. $45000(AUS), the same amount as I paid for it in 2 months ago.

2. Hand in my car now and wait 10 months for the replacment.

3. VW going to book a appointment for me to see their tech to discuss all the problems I found on my car and promise to fix them all. ( Problems like rattle from doors, steering grinding when stationary, gear box, etc.)

WHICH OPTION SHOULD I PICK???

I am in Australia, and DSG is the only option I have on my car.

Oh dear, sorry to hear about your problems. I guess your choice depends on how much in or out of love you are with the GTI and if you can bare to be away for it for so long.

What kind of noice does the gearbox make? I have a manual and it whines in heavy traffic, something I'm going to go to VW with this week.

That's really bad news.

I guess it depends on what you would do with the 45K and whether the GTI experience is still one you want to have.

I'd still look to see what VW can do as my first option. 10 months is a long time to wait for a replacement. I'd also have a bit of a look over your statutory rights regarding warranty - VW have to adhere to a statutory right in terms ofwarranty as well as any warrnaty they may offer such as th 3 year 100,000 waranty.

I think I would be trying to deal with VW directly. They have the their brand to protect - and they want to grow their business significantly here in Australia, they won't want you as a negative or unhappy customer damging thier 'hero' product at present.

I agree with Oz....

1) - Check out your legal rights before committing to anything at all (see a professional legal-eagle).

2) - Only deal with VW direct. The dealer will have other interests which may not be your best interests.

3) - IF you end up waiting for a replacement make sure that VW supply you with a decent car (not a Lupo or Polo) free of charge in the meantime.

Be polite but firm and keep recods and put matters in writing (Important!!).

Let us know how it goes and Good Luck 169144-ok.gif

Thanks for the advice GUYS!!!!

I had trade in my dream car WRX which is only nine months old to take this bloody GTI. I only had it for less than 2 months and my wife already compliant I was driving too fast, u guys should know what I mean, it is the GTI itself, not me. (Once I was doing 160km on a 60km zone, she didnt know that) It is too hard to keep it under legal speed limit.

I dont really think I can miss that fantistic tone which come from the engine and the exchaust for up to 10 months.

However, me and my wife do really loss the confidence on this particular GTI. And with $45000 I really couldnt think of any other car which is better than the GTI, cost of insurance, low fuel consumption and the power it deliver is no other car can compare with, R32 is really good but just not my cup of tea.

It is now VW Aust dealing with me not the dealer, they will contact me in this couple of days and I will let u guys know my final decision.

myimate, would you like to elaborate what kind of gearbox noise you are referring to? Is it some whining sound or a knocking type of sound? I’ve come to accept that the gti is not a “quiet” car in the “refined” sense and that it potentially may have some “issues”. The dsg does actually whine a bit, when I lift off the gas at low speeds. And the motor does rattle a lot at idling rpm’s. But it all disappears at higher speeds (engine and road) at which im assume that’s what the gti is really designed for.. Not knowing the severity of the issues (I have almost all the issues you highlight except steering grinding) it really is up to you and like what has been said here, how much you like the gti for what it is. It really is like a woman, if you love her, you must be able to overlook some of her faults!! But if the faults are that glaring to you to the extent that you can’t bear looking at her in the morning, than get your dosh back. Unfortunately there are hundreds of owners out there who have to put up with what you describe, including myself. Is that true love or is that the love for the automobile!

zoomx3, the noise is actually happen when the car going very slow in 2nd gear, but only happen in full auto mode.

I found out that in the first couple of days, but at that time the noise is very soft and it comes and goes, so I thought it might just need time to run in(That is what the dealer told me when i rang them). After 1000km on the clock, it still happen, and the noise is getting really loud, it sound like the gear is scratching something while they are rolling, also it definitely happen when the car going downward on 2nd gear. And the noise is pretty loud even ppl on the road can hear that.

Sounds pretty serious if it is some kind of a scratchy screechy kind of noise as opposed to a whining sound. 2nd gear you say? Interesting that you should say that, come to think of it, the whining sound seems to be the loudest in this gear as well. the funny thing is that ive actually programmed myself to forget the whine (or drive faster ;-) ) but it might actually be something you’re on to here. In fact, I don’t think the whine was there when the car was newer. Umm, now you know what I’m going to do right after work?

I checked it out last night and the transmission whine in 2nd gear (full auto) is loudest only between 5-15km/ hr. The whine dissappears when the speed is >15km/hr in 2nd, and im sure what you describe, myimate, is definitely more serious than this. hope it all pans out well.
