[Audi A3/S3] 2001 S3 with Sat/nav or without ?

I have the SatNav+ in my S3. I wasn't particularly looking for one with it, but the car did meet my other requirements. Anyway, I'd have to say, having recently done a long journey in a mate's car with TomTom on his PDA, go for an aftermarket setup. The OEM SatNav is ok, but you get some nice features with TomTom and the like that the OEM one just doesn't do (e.g. postcode lookup, points of interest, etc).

Nice choice to have there fella.

Without doubt I'd go for the best car overall and forget the sat nav system that comes with the car. The reason for this is because of the way technology becomes obsolete. If the car is a 2001 model then the sat nav technology was agreed upon during the development stages of the car. It won't be able to give you some of the rendering & tools that you get with the portable systems.

One of the other comments on here is bang too. When you're done with the car or just out of it you have the option of taking it with you.

I'd always go with the portable system. Also, they're much cheaper now at under £300.

Don't let the OEM Nav+ determine your choice of S3 - that would be silly.

I've retro fitted an OEM Nav+ into my 2001 S3 (with Bose) and it took around 4 hours. It's no big deal. What the people with portable Navs don't mention is that the OEM unit displays all the route instructions in the DIS which includes street name, distance to next turn, direction of next turn ETA etc.. The OEM unit also has places of interest - parking, ferries, hospitals, Audi dealers, sports grounds.... and a dozen other things. This info is on the map CD and nothing to do with the unit. The OEM looks great, doesn't look like an after thought stuck to your dash. And you can watch p o r n on it.

You can fit the newer RNS-E Nav+ into an S3, send Craigyb a PM and ask him.

I have had the old Nav+, Navman iCN510, TomTom 300 and DVD RNS-E and the best one by far is the RNS-E. Multiple route choices on start up is a godsend, keeping it all looking stock is worth the money alone and the MP3 card reader for music is excellent too.

Buy the car without, and preferably a symphony as it makes the upgrade a lot easier.
