RedRobin
A human story as opposed to the usual topics, but GTI related: Came up behind a black Mk2 GTI this gloriously sunny afternoon....Noticed lowered suspension and was surprised that he slowed to let me past. Naturally I dropped down two cogs and booted it so the driver could enjoy the sight of a Mk5 in full song. He flashed his lights and very enthusiastically waved a thumbs up in his windscreen and I replied with a through my sunroof. I then noticed the driver was a much older guy with silver grey hair and thought to myself that this could be me in 15 years time still driving my Mk5 and waving thumbs up at a Mk8 GTI rushing past. Later I drove up to my garage and was followed into the yard by three youngsters on bikes....I thought what do they want and as I got out of the car one said "Like the car mate!" so I said "So do I" and smiled. They then started asking me all sorts of questions like how many horsepower, where did I get the alloys, they liked the light glass tinting, those quad exhausts were VERY admired! Walking out of my yard I asked them about what cars they liked....Impreza, Ferrari, BMW 6-series!! They even knew model names and engine sizes!! They were only about 7-10 yo! I thought to myself that this was me when I was their age. Only posted to share the fact that the GTI brings out the best in people of all ages it seems. A great community . You don't get that driving a Ford or Vauxhall!
OzGTI
Red, You're right I'm not sure what it is about this car but people love and admire it. (I think it being in red helps of course). I was at traffic lights last week - two young guys pull up along side in this old Nissan Silvia Turbo thing. Now they are obviously 'car' guys but they wound their window down and started raving about the GTI. Then away for the weekend with my wife and a couple of her girl friends - and they start raving about the car. These are not car people , in fact niether of the two women that I'm referring to in the group actually own a car. Figure that. I think the Golf has some mystique in itself but the GTI is something special. It's not even that we have the heritage over here that is evident for the model in the UK and Europe. Mk1 GTi's were never imported new into Australia, (some second-hand cars ex UK have since turned up in very small numbers)some Mk2 arrived in small numbers, and Mk 4's were available - though no one is going to get too excited about a Golf gti mk 4 are they? RedRobin
Sorry but I would much rather have a BMW if I was going for a big two-door. But I'm glad you get some occasionally.

OzGTI
That's a big car for the UK!! Just stopped production of the Monaro over here for domestic consumption. They are still making them for a while longer for export markets. I can imagine you do get noticed in it but how do you find a car park wide enough to get those doors open? MOSE
LOL....you'd be suprised. You really do not need a great deal of room to open these doors. I'm not one for parking in multi-storeys or places like that, although I think I could benefit from having a sun roof, just in case I needed to use a carpark! OzGTI
Actually , as an Aussie and a very regular UK visitor I think its great to see the Monaro on British roads. I saw one on my last trip early this year. Holden's aren't my thing (if I was in the market for a big two I'd have to say the Bentley Conti GT has a presence - but I don't have the dough - large problem with that idea then) but I reckon you'll get lot's and lot's attention with the munro. RedRobin
IIRC JC on TG was singing the praises of the Monaro. I don't dislike it at all but I just prefer BMWs generally and would go for an M6.
wanderinghand
Brings a tear to my eye!! I pass a gorgeous MkI on my way to the office every morning - I can't wait until my MkV arrives so that I can start making friends with him!!!
