matt5791
Can anyone point me in the right direction for best prices on tyres. My W plate 3.7 quattro sport has the 18 inch spoke alloys (popular on A8's) and currently has Bridgestone potenza tyres which I think I would like to stick with as I only need to replace 2 tyres. Anyone have any tips for the best places for price? (UK of course) Thanks Matt
robmorphet
I use Maxxis, 18" 245/40 and they cost me £90 each inc fitting. They run well, as I do alot of Mway miles. My A8 Sport has now done 156K.

cruiser647
Hey RobMorphet, shouldn't that be 245/45 x 18"???? I might be wrong, but I am sure that's what was on mine. (A8 4.2 Quattro Sport)
charlie61
If you can get into Costco you won't find cheaper Michelins anywhere, there's one in Birmingham just off the M6 around junction 5-6 I think. You need to be self employed or work for certain employers, hospital fire police solicitors etc or you can be a member on someone else's account, there is an annual charge but you'll recover this and more on 1 tyre
robmorphet
no, I had 265/45/18's on the back fo towing, lasted longer, then moved to 255/35/18 which were crap as the cars low anyway. Finally stuck at 245/40/18's. They seem to wear well (not 165K well though!!) and handle relativly well too. Felt that a 245/45 gave too much tyre movement, but that could just be all in the grey matter.....with bikes it makes a big difference on turning, braking and sliding. The Maxxis last maybe 30K fronts, 40K rears but I do tow a trailer at speed.
Wilfred
Ordered a pair of Dunlop Sport 9000s 245/45 R18s Y rating for mine getting them fitted for £340 pair. I could have got cheaper but my local tyre shop is much more convenient for me. My question is that my fronts are wearing heavily on the outside edges. Is this usual or is there likely to be an underlying problem. Car drives and tracks perfectly. Thanks
robmorphet
I noticed mine wearing on the very outside, and put it down to reversing a trailer quite a bit, which is low speed wheel movement scrubbing them harder than normal. During the off season (ie when I'm not racing) the tyre wear is less....
Wilfred
Update - got the new tyres but the camber is out and the tyre shop dont have the equipment to refit. Is this likely to be anything more sinister?
Mort
it would be worthwhile getting a proper 4 wheel alignment and tracking setup.... Its not expensive and would save your new tyres from being ruined.... Your car will handle properly too.....
Wilfred
I know you're right. Its just the credit cards already suffering after the cost of the tyres. Whats depressing is that I have to keep an account for work of all my motoring costs for my A8. Having bought the car in May I've spent almost 3k already (including admittedly a fair amount of fuel and insurance costs).
PSU
Earlier this year I hit a kerbside drain with the grate missing at approx 50mph. The BANG scared the sh!t out of me but also caused the tyrewall to have a hernia. I replaced the tyre at a cost of £260.00 (20" Michelin Sports) and carried on driving. After a months worth of driving I became conscious that I had to hold the steering wheel slightly towards 1 'o' clock to stay on a straight line. Took the car to a local tyre dealer/garage and I got the fright of my life. The new tyre I replaced 1 month earlier had completely worn down on the inside shoulder right down to the inner canvas showing a small white ring the whole circumference of the tyre. I had one of those ‘out of body experiences’ reflecting on the fact that a week earlier I had been ‘storming’ it down the M4 at 100mph+ = Scary and glad to be still alive! The initial BANG had actually knocked out the camber meaning the tyre was running on a small portion of the inside wall rubber (do not confuse with tracking). To correct it I had to put the 8 into Audi at a cost of £150.00 as they have the correct equipment to line up the 4 wheel drive. Total cost of incident including 2 x new tyres + camber correction = £670.00. Ouch…… Morale to the story = Do not skimp on tyres and their settings as it is false economy and very dangerous.
