2000 TDi power question??

A quick question,

I just went to veiw a passat tdi estate this evening, it is a pre face lift 2000 (V-reg) and was advertised as a 110bhp.

Now the odd bit, when i turned up it had a red "di" on the boot lid, so i checked under the bonnet and it had the larger plastic engine cover (same as my dads 2001 130sport) and this cover also had the red "di".

Now i asked the owner and he said he wasn't exactly sure but though it was a 110 Tdi, i am not to clued up on passats and thought the 130 was only fitted to the 2001 onward models?

I drove it and it was certainly quick when up on boost, but to be honest after being a "petrol head" for 14 years i just cant compare to anything and i havn't driven my dads car for ages (250 miles away from me)

I will be going back to veiw the car tommorow and will check engine code etc....

But for now what do you guys think? is it possibly a 130??

Anyone know the score??

Cheers guys....... smile.gif

Wheres it advertised? How much for? grin.gif only joking blush.gif

I think there are X regs with the PD130. Not sure on a V, but its a late V so could be. Trying to workout what the engines would be to get you the red di! Could it be a 115PD? With the 90bhp and 110bhp models creating the red di? From whats posted on this forum regarding the PD115, its best to steer clear of it. The early PD engines had a number of problems that were ironed out of the later models

You need an engine code, you may get yourself a bargin here 169144-ok.gif (if its the PD130)

Dont listen to me too much...... I know very little and talk toooooo much tongue.gif

It depends what milage you are expecting to do and how you drive. Seems that the head gasket can be a problem. There are other issues, have a search on the forum. Rusty will be here any second with a list of what to look for.

Hes the expert on here

Seriously, I'm no expert on Passats but engine wise, the 115 was the first attempt at a PD engine. They were bound to get a few things wrong, and the later 130 addressed these issues. Given the choice between a 110 and a 115, I think I'd go for a 110. However, the 115 is a very tuneable unit and you'll be able to tweak it up to about 150 bhp with a remap, if you want to go there.

Wobby'll know more about the Passat as a car in general.

I have never had a 115PD. Had a 90 and a 110 and a 130PD.

I looked at a 115PD engined Passat with around 50k (i think). I never got to driving it! The salesman assured me the oil that was all over the engine and had been thrown all over in the engine bay and got onto some of the belts and had sprayed on the underside of the bonnet had...... occured when his clumsey appentice had topped up the oil!!!

The engine seemed to move a lot in the engine bay and sounded crap, I tried to show him my 90 bhp Passat engine, but he wouldn't look. It had 210k, no oil anywhere and ran much smoother. It was the worst VW engine i have ever seen and it only had 50k. Thats my only experience with a 115PD, i didn't buy it!

If there are weaknesses in the engine design it would seem mad to me to get it remapped, i would think something is bound to break. You would be better getting a tuning box on a 110. Only my opinion. Less power in the end, potentially more noise but should be reliable.

Have a good look at it before buying. I always tell them i want to see it start from flat cold, feel at engine and check oil level before its started. If its warm tell them you'll come back.

EDIT.

Even a high mileage diesel should start easily and run very smoothly without excessive noise. It should be smooth through the revs and should pull well.

I have a 115PD, currently at 110k miles and running strong with no mechanical problems at all - touchwood - it's also been running a chip for the last 30k miles, and I don't hang about lol.

Must admit that it's a tad noisier than the 130PD unit, but isn't too far off from performance point of view. Definitely go for a PD model over the 110bhp model though, the extra 5bhp feels more like 25bhp after back to back test drives, and they were only available as W or X plates.

Thanks for opinions guys... Well went back and seen the car from stone cold, started on the button no problems, sounds pretty quite to me, has full VW history and has also had a new air flow sensor.

Drives very well, boost pulls nice and early, has some goodies like climate control a/c, wires in boot for cd changer, and the usual remote doors/alarm, gear gaiter is a little worn (ebay £10) no body repairs i could see etc.

Looks like im gonna buy it!!!
