Phil330
My car will be 2 years old next June, and i haven't yet kept any of my cars for more than 2years, thats not to say i am fed up with them, but its nice to have a change. Think i am right in saying that the new M3 won't be out then, and i think there's talk of 2007? I like the current M3, but prefer the facelift front on mine, so it would feel like i am getting something more dated. Cue, SLK55 AMG, apart from having to scratch around the house to find another £15000 to get one over the price of mine, i am really keen on having such a small car with a monstrous engine, but i do love BMW's and am a bit worried i will miss the little BMW things (the innovative lights, driving position, handling, key fob ). Anyone make any suggestions?
david_d
How about the Cayman S? Audi RS4? I'm hoping to upgrade around the time of the 06 plate and those two cars on top of my list.

NewNiceMrMe
If I was in the same market (and it sounds like you're wanting to keep to a Convertible to me) then the SLK55 AMG would be something I'd look at. An Audi RS4 is an option, but what about an M3 CSL as a cheaper....but faster alternative.
Woppum
From my experience with the SL (55 and 65), they are very fast cars with a lot of grunt, but not that fun or rewarding, they are heavy and the centre of gravity is all wrong. They look good, possibly too good for a bloke , make a great noise, but they will never be as much fun down your fave roads than the comparable BMW. But the SLK may well be different, I'd try it and see what you think.
Phil330
Yeh, that was my only concern with the Merc's, just not sure i'd get the same experience. I did see a middle aged woman driving a Silver on yesterday which put me off just thinking maybe its a bit tame? The CSL's are coming down in price, pleased i didnt buy one of those new!! has anyone driven one? I'd be annoyed having the lack of multi function steering wheel, and rotary dials?? After having the 5 series, and even the 325 to an extent, i want small and fast, plus like a big engine! I love the new Range Rover Sport, and the X5 4.8, but reckon i would soon get bored. I like the fact that i find reasons to go out in mine at the moment!

[/ QUOTE ] Well, I'm trying to find the exact article but cnt find it on tyresmoke, i'll tell u the jist of it. there was a 1-series for about £110,000 with some dirty engine size in it ... Does that satisfy your needs? (small car and big engine!) ... Failing that, have abitta fun with a mini!

Gareth
Phil No way you'd be bored with a X5 4.8iS or the SLK55 - both great cars with loads of character. I'd certainly have a look at a SLK55 AMG (don't worry that JC has one...it's still a very good car )

balboni
I had an SLK350 for a few weeks, and that really grew on me. Very capable car, with a capable chassis. The 7spd autotronic whatever its called is crap. I mean really crap. Too many gears, and too slow witted. Otherwise it has auto lights, Good sat nav/dvd unit and the best sound system I have heard in any convertible (kicks BMW & Audi backside). The metal folding hardtop is just genius (no creases in canvas, full insulation). The 55 must be a real hoot.

Woppum
I dont think the 55 has the 7-speed box. I think it is a normal 5-speed. It is the lesser powered cars which have that box.
JAYDR32
Phil Good friend of mine had a test drive in the SLK 55 AMG at the weekend and was blown away by it and he has had his share of nippy motors, he has put his order in he liked it that much, magical noise, was slightly concerned about the 7-G tronic with AMD speedshift box but he said he got used to it quickly and it was smooth power delivery all the way through, well worth a look mate you lucky git if you get one!!!
