mb
Does anyone know if XPPro will boot without screen, kb, mouse - I have an oldish Dell 2300 that I am using as a music server just thought I could use remote desktop to control it so was wondering if you think it will POST without these ? I will have a play at the weekend but wondered if anyone could tell me for sure ? Thnaks Martin
Ritey
Should do, I have a box without anything on used for serving an internal website using IIS and I remote to it with no problems
colinc
The BIOS may have to be set to ignore keyboard errors, depends upon the age of the PC, otherwise it should work perfectly OK.
simkna
Should be fine. I use an old P4 laptop for the same purpose, but remote desktop to it more often than not. Si.
mb
Thanks guys - it was the kb I most thought would cause teh problems - that is a good tip to look in the BIOS but provided I can lose the screen will still mean I can still tuck it away Cheers Martin
mb
Just thought - it is connected by Wireless LAN - do you think XP will have to have booted fully for me to remote desktop to it ? I supose I could use a piece of EN cable & a laptop but would be easier to remote desktop to it wirelessly Thansk Martin
shark_90
It will have to be booted fully for you to RDP to it yes, but it doesn't have to be logged on. I doubt you'll get it to boot without a keyboard so you might need to leave one plugged in. And of course remember to give it a static IP
mb
Thanks - will have a go & see how I get on Cheers Martin
mb
Well - it needs the kb to boot but I can (have to wait a while) log on wirelessly so I now have a music server in the cupboard under teh stairs (suprising how warm it gets in there) & a clutter free spare room. I also found you can short 2 pins of a PSU/AT adapter to fool it that a kb is present - there was no BIOS option. Cheers Martin
