Running in a new car

I've had my A4 2.0TDI a week now, being fairly gentle with her, not going over 3k revs.

What's everybody's opinion on running new cars in especially diesels?

The dealer just told me to take it easy for the first 1000 mile, and the handbook says don't go over 75% of the top speed??

I'm just wondering if I'm doing the correct thang!

Mine had done 24 miles before I collected it. It had been on the dealers premises for 3 days before I got it, so I am 100% sure someone was using it before I got it. Probably ragging the arse off it.

I had to drive on the motorway on the way home, but limited it to 60mph.

I'm on 125 miles now and the rest of the driving has been urban and under 3000rpm.

The dealer told me the same as you, at the same time as saying that engines don't really need to be run in anymore.

Either way, I prefer to take it easy for 1000miles, then gradually get heavier with the right foot.

This is the correct advice for the dealers. If you are careful during the first 500+ miles it will prolong the distance to the first AVS you need.

My computer is currently saying first service at 18k miles, after 9k miles. And I've started ragging it now!

The ragging it from new is one way but I'm NOT convinced. I just follow what the handbook says and then drop the oil at 1000miles (350 on the bike).

Take a look Here for the ragging argument.................

The bike made 122 BHP standard - SP1's vary between 116-124.

The car showed 208 BHP (210PS) standard on Stars Dyno.

There's a very small window of opportunity to get the rings to seal really well ... the first 20 miles !!

is that the person at the dealership who set up your bike (or in my case, car) probably blasted your brand new bike pretty hard on the "test run". So, without realizing it, that adrenaline crazed set - up mechanic actually did you a huge favor !!

The last 2 cars I've had were both identical PD130 Bora's.

I got the first 1 with 2500 miles on the clock, and it'd been used very gently. It used a couple of litres of oil up to 12k miles and then about a litre up to 20k miles. The second car I got from new and hammered it on the way home from the dealers. 1/2 litre of oil up to first service at 17k miles 169144-ok.gif

Well I must say... this has become quite a dilemma!

I'm due to take delivery of a 2006 A3 2.0 TDI DSG S-Line (can't wait wink.gif ) and now this has got me thinking what exactly should I do? Go for Motoman's article (seems very knowledgeable) but which could be just a nut saying what he pleases (welcome to the internet eh?) or go with Audi's recommendations on the manual...

Most likely then not I can see myself doing a bit of both (first 1000 miles easy with occasional moments of hard acceleration and breaking)... but I really dunno...

On the way home from Birmingham Saturday night and my car passed the 1000 miles mark. Unfortunately, it didn't occur to me to take a photograph. Then again, I was concentrating on my driving as it was sooooooooo foggy. It was the worst I have ever driven in, practically all the way from Birmingham to Liverpool along the M6. Visibility down to a few yards at points.

The few times it did clear I reached the dizzy heights of 85mph! blush.gif (Fastest I have been in the car, so far. smirk.gif)
