doogal1972
I hope I'm not going over old ground here but as there seems to be a few of us having the same problem I'd thought I'd ask the question. Is replacing the MAF sensor a specialist job (AMD or Dealer) or is it something that can be done by anyone in the know? Also, any ideas on how much it costs for a replacement? Cheers in advance....Doogs
Wallachie
I know there are members here who have replaced their MAF's themselves, I think a new MAF is circa £80 but you may have to give the dealer your old one in exchange. Someone who knows for sure will be along soon I'm sure, I know Paul-S3 will be able to tell you how to change it!

Mastermofo
yes you can change it yourself in 10mins flat (few bolts only i think) around 80-90 fom dealer think you pay 120 and then they refund the difference once you hand in the old faulty unit changed mine after having lumpy idle and all the other problems (inc. car dangerously cutting out under breaking!!) and the difference was incredible
doogal1972
Is it best to get the car checked out first, or just go for it? My point being, everything that's been said on here seems to correspond with the problems I've been having but I don't want to replace something if it doesn't need doing and still be left with a fault. Symptoms are: crap fuel consumption and turbo feels flat sometimes, and at others it just flies! So everything points to the MAF sensor? What do ya reckon? Wallachie
Sounds like the MAF to me, I had the same problem with my last S3 and Audi changed the MAF and it sorted the problem out perfectly. Mine was flat after about 2500rpm and I had to lift off and put my foot down again to get the power up again. This is a very common fault, so I would say there is a 90% chance it's a faulty MAF. Mastermofo
well the problems i had i ended up taking my car to audi 2-3 times as it was cutting out at junctions and traffic lights and this of course killed the power steering which was potentially life threatening I ended up paying for them to reset the ECU error codes on each occassion (1/2 hr labour)and they didnt tell me to replace the MAF - once i did it it was like a new car and also fuel economy was up and the symptoms have never returned take a look and see if it has ever been replaced/looks cleaner than rest of engine bay - mine was the original from factory and so i just changed it if someone close to you has VAG-COM perhaps they could read the MAF values ?? Id just change it as they are well reported to be the first thing to fail
doogal1972
Nice one guys Just ordered one and going to pick it up later. I've not had all of the other problems some of you guys have, just the crap economy and a bit of an idle turbo intermitantly. You gotta love this place, I'm sure it saves us all £'s asking questions on here, rather than finding out the hard way! Oh yeah, just one more dumb arse question....where is the MAF located so I can change it?!! I know, I'm bloody useless when it come to cars! Mastermofo
stand in front of the car and to your right hand side youll see the airbox which contains filter etc and between that and the engine the maf is connected - youll see a squarish section inbetween the piping and it has a wire coming off it
doogal1972
Cheers mate ".....and I pay here do I?" I really ought to know more about cars!
neo283
My MAF came as a whole unit, including a sensor and piece of ducting to piece into the inlet. Needed a clamp rather than un-bolting I think. Not sure how to describe the clamp though! Like a re-usable jubilee clamp?!? Anyway, should be a doddle. Do you have a replacement (K&N style) filter? You're probably already aware, but it's common for these to be the cause of a faulty MAF. And yeah, TSN rules! Saves me a bundle!
doogal1972
No I don't have a K & N filter. Everything is standard on my baby! Cheers for the advice mate
