Where do I start, oh where do I start.

Ok, well let's get the cliche, trite and superlative crap over with...

Utterly mind-blowing. That's what the BMW M6 is. What you want to know is how fast it feels, how well it handles, how good it sounds and the most important feel of all - how does it leave you feeling.

So, how fast does it feel.

Ermm, too fast. Yes, too fast. This car is simply fast in the extreme. I never thought I'd say that after driving a Noble M400, but the M6 accomplishes a feeling of grunt that is akin to something of a mountain moving level.

It's pull in 1st gear feels much faster than the figures tell you (sub 5 second). It felt more like sub 4 second to me. It's grip (and it was belting down with rain) was very good too. Whilst DSC+T was going like the clappers...the car was too.

M6A.jpg

You have to remember that I had to treat the car gently too - it's brand spanking new with 17 miles on the clock.

So it's best to say I cannot imagine the M6 disappointing even the most demanding of speed freaks where straight line pull, grunt and shattering horizon seeking pursuit are concerned.

Handling, well that's something the conditions allowed to be tested a little more. The grip and handling cannot be compared to my 645 - because it makes the 645 look plain silly. The roads were like rivers up here today, so the M6 seemed like a speedboat neatly carving it's way through the waves without a care or loosely place corner. It's agility made it feel much smaller than my own 6.

The 645's common understeer is gone. The pin-like precision of the M6 is in an altogether different league.

The grip from a standstill, the weight of the steering, the balance of the car - everything felt perfectly honed.

So on to the sound. Actually let's skip it and just say it is ear splittingly loud and should summon up orgasms aplenty from male and female alike. The sound clip I have posted in the BMW M section doesn't do it justice. It sounds 3 times as good in reality. It's the best sounding car I have ever heard - by a good margin. Even the M400 Turbo dumping pales into second place compared to this.

The brakes inspire a feeling of rather dangerous confidence too. I say that because I suspect you'll have a very nasty incident if they do ever let you down, because of the sheer pace of the car. However, if you can imagine throwing 10 anchors out of the car when you want to slow down, anchors the size of those hooked up to an aircraft carrier, then you'll be just about there. If you prod the brakes hard - be prepared to press your nose against the windscreen.

How did it leave me feeling? Ermm, like I wanted one. Now.

I seriously seriously seriously wasn't even going to think about buying one. Yet I've had to spend the last 3 hours thinking of reasons not to. I have eventually decided not to, but it's a car that you can fall in love with so deeply it's very much the devil of temptation.

It left me feeling electric. Tingling. Heart pumping. 10 feet high. It left me feeling like I could have never imagined.

It looks a million dollars in Silverstone II and whilst Black wouldn't have been my choice of interior colour, well it blends well.

The Carbon trim isn't something I like too much, yet it's tailored well and doesn't look out of place. The Carbon on the roof is something altogether different though - it's vast! From the back it makes the car look like it has a full panoramic roof because it blends with the curved rear screen so incredibly well.

The interior is typically BMW. Stark, clinical, solid and functional.

They've actually recrafted the i-Drive button in the M6 too - it's no longer like an upturned pie-tin with grooves. It's now like a solid but sculpted piece of aluminium with a very cold hard metal finish to it. I'm not sure I liked it's feel, but it looks very cool indeed.

The SMG paddles are a much better feel than in the M3's too. They're thicker, feel better, and engage much more with your fingers.

The steering wheel is the same as in the 645...with the exception of the M button. M stands for Mindblowing. I'm not going to say much more about it. Oh, except that when we switched it on....we didn't switch it back off!!!!!

The HUD is an odd one for me. See, I think it functions a bit better in the M5. Why? Well because the screen is more steeply raked in the M6 and it seemed rather more difficult to see. It projects it ahead of you of course, making it look like it's hanging in mid air above the bonnet - but for me the M5 HUD seemed clearer.

It could have been a result of the conditions (pi$$ing it down) and lighting (very changeable) but I switched it off after less than a few minutes use.

Now then, a big factor here....the ride quality was stunning. How they have damped it this well is quite incredible. It just didn't feel harsh at all. Harder than the 645, yes, but not overly bone crunching.

So finally, the looks of the car. Well I still think you either love or hate the 6-series. I love it. The increased front air dam and the mega-mega-cool venturi style tunnel at the back look fantastic....and the exhausts are the same as on the M5 and look very purposeful indeed.

So let me leave you with this. On an incline, on a major A road, in very rainy conditions, most of the traffic ahead cleared when it saw the M6 looming. I am not going to say what happened when I hit third and fourth gear hard - but my god - that experience and the movement of the speedo needle (and where it ended up) will live with me forever.

I have found a new idol. It's called the M6 and I WILL have one. Just not yet! grin.gif

Do you think it is worth the extra 20k or so?

[/ QUOTE ]

I think my answer to that is a bit subjective to be honest.

See, I don't like the look of the 5, yet I love the look of the 6 - so I'm bound to say yes.

However, on other merits alone...

- Noise...much better in the M6

- Involvement...the M6 felt much more involving and rewarding

- Grunt...they're both very very fast - but the M6 'felt' quicker

So, it's a big yes from me (I didn't even consider an M5 after looking at one and driving one, and I could have had one instead of the 645 Convertible if I'd wanted - but the M5 just left me wanting in a way I didn't expect).

Cheers JS. 169144-ok.gif

On this occasion though, the car was very much the star! grin.gif

hehe, well, reviews tend to be easier/better when the vehicle in question is particularly bad or good... and it sounded like you were beginning to run out of superlatives to use when describing the M6!

Certainly sounds like one hell of a car.

Yep...I've uploaded it onto the front page of my website (which is mid-change at the moment so excuse the mess).

If you look below the picture on the Home Page I've put a link in for you to right-click on and download the full 1.7Mb image. 169144-ok.gif

Oh, and for those that haven't already seen it....here is the link to the small movie I shot on my camera....kneel to that noise...and turn the volume up!

Nice car! But I don't like that carbon interior. Its trying to be a bit race car in something that is actually a luxury place.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ditto, too much, Can you change it to alu trim or soemthing similar. Otherwise, I'd be tempted to switch brands on that review.

Now all I have to do is convince the other half that living in a two bed flat for the next 5 years isn't such a bad prospect and the proceeds of selling mine could be far better invested..... slap.gif
