UBM
So, the B7 avant, 2.0TDI, FWD, 140PS has a reported torque of Max. torque, Nm at rpm 236(320)/1750-2500 . So, if I were to consider a remap, to say 165 PS - how well would you think the FWD would cope with the extra torque?
nbritt
I used to have a Golf GTI Mk iv 150BHP, I bought a Vanaaken Smartbox which added about 25 BHP and 25 foot pounds of torque. This car was front wheel drive and the extra power wasnt a problem in the dry but in the wet in 1st and second liked to wheel spin. Well worth it though, an AMD or Superchips re-map would be fantastic for a car like yours.
Ian_C
Not going to really help UBM here as the AmD PD 140 will be approaching another 100 lb ft over your chipped MkIV GTi. From memory, the 1.8T GTi makes 154 hence 179 lb ft chipped. The PD 140 makes 236 as UBM mentions above, hence 276 with the AmD Stage 1 35 bhp, 40 lb ft increase. You not find it slipping all over the place in stock tune? Tobys' A3 Sportback PD 140 Sport seems to twitch on broken country roads - especially through tight second and third gear corners - in bone dry conditions. You can feel the tyres judder as the electronics cut in. For reference, his had the standard sport 17s - like this one (courtesy of Sidicks) with wide pirelli p zero rosso tyres. Had always thought Pirelli as being strangely soft and fast wearing brand - whilst never seeming to actually give any grip. The Sportback changed my attitude on this! A spot of seriously late braking from 90 (kph officer) proved the tyres are up to the task. Simply could not believe how quickly the Sportback shed all the speed on a damp road. Toby couldn't either - and it was his car!! Certainly gives the impression it is the torque - not the tyres - that causes the wheels to slip. G'luck deciding UBM. nbritt
I think it may help my Golf was a diesel with approx 230 foot pounds of torque, nearly 260 with smartbox.
Ian_C
I'll get my coat. PD 130 / 150 I take it then rather than the usual GTi? Opps! Ian
Avus_Bub
[ QUOTE ] how well would you think the FWD would cope with the extra torque? [/ QUOTE ] I knew there was a reason I didn't let the salesman talk me out of Quattro!! [ QUOTE ] Are you sure you need it? Do you live in a hilly area? [/ QUOTE ] Of course I don't need it but I just couldn't bring myself to buy a new Audi without it................ Quattro Anyway I'll just never know , will I? lottiefox
I would really want to drive a similar car with it done before I did it to my own if its a FWD issue - you could end up having to drive like Miss Daisy in the rain. Good idea though, I'm all for enhancements... PS How are you getting this one past Mrs UBM?

GCab
For what it's worth: I spoke to a (highly-regarded) tuning chappy when I was thinking of changing cars from FWD to Quattro cab. Because of the position I was in (was thinking of getting an MTM remap, but talking to him about my car decision) he didn't have anything to lose by taking a neutral view. His view? "To be honest, the front wheel drives don't always cope with the remaps that well". Main problem being torque steer. I got the impression he wouldn't have said that if I'd just rung up and said "I have a FWD TDI, what do you reckon?", but given the choice of chipping a FWD or a quattro, he basically indicated he was much happier doing the latter. I just love the neutral handling of Quattro - Ok with mild understeer but untouchable in the wet. BUB

Sparky
You wet lettuce. Get it done! I am - I know of about 4 chipped A4's and none of them have problems other than in very wet conditions - or unless you drive like MrMe.
