What to replace the M3 with?

A sad day has come, I have to sell my Carbon Black M3 to free up some funds to do the House and Mortgage thing. I want to replace the M3 with a half descent motor, I have previously had a TT and an S3. The S3 looks like a good option as I could pick one up for around 15K. What other car could I get for that cash with nice comfort and good performance. Cant beleive I have to sell the M3 frown.gif

Surely the S3 would be cheaper to run compared to an R32 due to fuel costs etc.? the difference in performance is negligable too.

Only differences will be much nicer engine note in R32 and different way of delivering the power. test drive both and see what you prefer. I actually prefered the S3 cos it gave more of a shove in the back and gave fuel economy that the R32 could never dream to acheive but everyone is different.

How about a B5 S4? you can pick these up cheap now and they're very capable.

B5 S4 sounds like a plan as I was behind one the other day and it was as fast as my M3. I think it had been tinkered with. Anyone know of a good one for sale or where I should look. Audi.co.uk has one for sale in the used car locator.

Hmm, I'm not so sure on this as a wise move. What you'll realise in capital you'll lose in running costs - and quickly.

Probably the best option is a good clean S3. Low running cost's, good fuel consumption and are pretty quick. Wouldnt mind picking up a late 03 Avus one.

Had thought about a cooper s as the bottom seems to have dropped out of the mini market with used ones going pretty cheap and there are loads to choose from.

Ok i cant spend time digging out my old posts where i compared my S3 to the R32.

They are both based on the MK4 Golf platform and i would say the R32 was the best handling/sounding car out of the box....

The S3 is a much classier motor car and the interior ooozes quality... the R32 is more raw and insurance was about £200 more per year... the mpg was alot worse when driven hard but the noise more than made up for it.

The R32 was a limited run where as the S3 wasnt..... two different types of cars...... mmmmm....

If it came down to overall costs the S3 would be the better choice, good all round car...

If mpg isnt a big issue the R32 would be better, the package for the R32 is great, ok its a VW but this means cheaper servicing costs.

The R32 has better brakes, engine, suspension, exhaust system along with other things the S3 lacked... the S3 is more of a smooth running car.

Mmmmmmmm the R32 wont cost as much to run compared to the M3 so thats why i was thinking that it mights be a good choice for you... but if you want to save more money and still have a nice little car.. go for the S3.

The R32 in 5 door is even more rarer and more practicle with its rear doors...

Depends on you useage.

So you prefer the R32 (IV) to the S3, Riz?

[/ QUOTE ]Well actually i miss both cars just as much... some may say they are similar but i disagree... the R32`s handling was a peach!

If the S3 had the R32`s running gear it would have been perfect... the S3 engine just lacks the N/A feel which the R32 delivers, no turbo lag and offers more torque and bhp. Especially with the 6463 update... appprox 250bhp.

It handled better, sounded better, went better..... miss it frown.gif

I'm in exactly the same position at the moment.

My beloved 03 M3 cab is going to help pay for rebuilding work on the house and I'm pretty much settled on the S3. Interior is very "high rent" and it's just a nice car to be in. That said I am going to get it "breathed on" by Revo or the suchlike. I drove a remapped car at an Audi dealer yesterday. Blimey. smile.gif

I have been browsing for a while, but this is my first post on TSN!

Nice choice the S3, Stickybloke, I had one before going for my current M3 - and I miss it.

I also had a Revo remap done on it and it did make a big difference - the fact that its switchable is also nice.

However, when I had it on the Super Unleaded setting I am sure I used suffer some clutch slippage :-(

Its funny, I am also considering selling the M3 in order to release some cash (just for the short trem!) and have the same dilemma of what to replace it with!

Anyway good luck with your purchase.

How do the running costs of the Alpina (inc: service and insurance) compare to the M3? confused.gif

I assume the 330d will be far cheaper in all respects, especially fuel!! And once chipped will be quite rapid too - making it a really good replacement, if the main objective is to save cash.

How about a MK5 Golf GTi - its had some good reviews - even JC loved it.

IMO its smart and has a good image. It will be relatively cheap to run - especially if you have come from an M3!

Ok its not really rapid but a good motor all round - with the possibility of strong-ish residuals

Hi,

Thought I would just let you know that I recently sold my Audi S4 and replaced it with an M3. MPG wise, there is no contest the M3 is better on fuel and imo feels quicker. But dont get me wrong the s4 is a good car but not something I would choose if i wanted to downgrade.

Definately R32, S3, 350z the excellent Golf GTI MK5 or how about another 3 with a smaller engine maybe?

  • 2 weeks later...

I've just sold my R32 I had for 18months, and bought a new M3. Power wise the M3 beats it hands down, and the MPG is about the same if not better in the M3. But come to a wet day (we live in england after all) and i miss the 4WD of the R32. If I had to sell my M3, i'd definately buy another R32. Plus I used to always beat S3's when i raced them on the motorway, although I did modify my R32!

I know what you mean about missing the 4-wheel drive in the wet. I replaced my S3 with my current M3 about 18 months ago.

In the dry its virtually untouchable grin.gif and would kill an S3 - even a reasonably moded one

But in the the wet the M3 can be a fekr.gif.

Used to able to dump the clutch on the S3 from 4-5000rpm and it would just skittle off, no drama, no spin just power down - even in the wet 169144-ok.gif

I think an S3 or R32 may get the upper hand on a rainy day shocked.gif

But any way back on topic, replacing an M3 with something that will not be too much of a step down - is a tough one.

As I said MK5 Golf Gti is nice tongue.gif

Equally S3 or R32 are brill - its down to personal choice
