Stumbled across a beauty

Quite surprising that people are still willing to spend 3 grand on one, when you see what you can get for the same money if you look around.

I used to have one of these and I quite liked it but always thought the engine was a bit puny compared to the 16v Astra that it rivalled.

MKII Gti, Big Bumper, 1.8 16V - the best of the GTi's IMO!!!!

[/ QUOTE ]

Totally 169144-ok.gif, although if it was a choice between one of those (mint of course) or a mint 1.6 GTI Mark 1... hmm what would you choose?!?

One is without a doubt the better drivers car, but one is without a doubt the true icon confused.gif

....Defo an iconic classic but have you driven a Mk5 GTI yet?

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes had two test drives and a shot in my mates! Very nice it is as well, but coming from an R32 it was a different drive and I'd need much longer to form an opinion of any merit!

I would choose a Mk1 1.8 Campaign grin.gif much more usable engine than the 1.6 and stronger power is abit like the mk5 GTI really for its spread of usable power and low down grunt the 1.6 is needs revs to shift.

I reckon the MkV has helped the residuals of good early GTI's you know!!!! It certainly has done wonders for the GTI brand.

[/ QUOTE ] Mk1 prices have not changed. They have been steady dropping for the past few years or so, you were luckie then to get a good campaign for less than £3K now there about £2K or £3K for near concours. Mk2 prices for late 91/92 J plate 8V and 16V in standard mint condition have always been quite high too.

The last of the lines of mk2 and mk1 have always had a HUGE premium over the slightly earlier cars for some reason.

Must say this is a first i have seen a H plate go this expensive though even if its in showroom condition its a high price for it.

I sent my mate this ebay link as he is a GTI nut and has a mk2 16V H plate he has owned from new and it has less miles and is in better condition than this one (totally mint in standard condition) and i quote his email responce "One (or indeed, a few) born every minute..........."

As i always say its only worth what someone will pay for it.

The P hole Alloys I remember thinking they were the coolest hing ever when my parents had a MKII brochure back in '85.

Depressingly, I walked past a "pimped" Corsa (with widebody kit and beancan exhausts) which had five spokes on the bakc and a set of classic P holes on the front yesterday.

Pirelli alloys are a fav of mine especially the way they have lasted. I never really looked after them in the past 15 years of ownership of the car and apart from the raised edge of the rim protector were theres a couple marks from the previous owner catching the edge of the curb after 22 years they still look like new. Wish they made alloys last like that now.

Anorak time lol the mk2 golf Pirelli alloys are different to the Mk1s the gap between the Ps are 10mm on the mk2 and only 8mm on the mk1 due to the extra weight of the mk2 the original centre caps for the mk2 most don't have pirelli wrote on them.

lol, if i was a real anorak like some of the mk1 boys are i would point out my car is not 100% correct in its present state, for example silver VW badge (beasty boys fans nicked the black one in the 90s arr), Missing side stripes & rear hatch lower coach line, front spoiler missing, original Pioneer dealer fit audio with electric aerial well at the moment im running kenwood but still have the original dealer fitted stuff i got with the car (no audio was OEM and i have the original DIN blacking pocket that came with the car from the factory) also has armour door plates but there a must nowadays, as is the thatchem alarm and locking wheel nuts for daily use. The bits that are wrong or missing i have new genuine VW parts to replace them for when i restore it so im not really that bothered.

IMHO the mk1 is still the most fun to drive of all the GTIs it always brings a big smile to my face driving it the throttle response and nimbleness and turn in of the chassis the steering feel etc the weight at about 840Kg about what a lotus is now helps here the MK2 is fun too but more diluted and a far better allrounder than the mk1 ie it can do 400 mile motorway cruises without all the noise. It also has far more suspension travel than the mk1 so does not thump and bump into potholes as bad its far more refined is probably the best way to describe the mk2 its a good allrounder. Were as the mk3 & 4 went far too far too refinement and had poor damping not enough feel and fun. The Mk5 brings the fun back but in a much bigger car that feels it to me and is less gokarty than the mk1&2 more a fast cruiser probably not the best word to describe it more a well bolted down fun handler is probably better that can be chucked about for fun but the same fun comes at far higher speeds but it lacks the steering feel and comunication feel compared to the older models imo. Mk1,2 and 5 are all great fantastic GTIs for different reasons imho and im fortunate to get the opportunity to drive all 3 on a regular basis.

Oh and my fav mk2 was always the 91/92 J plate runout 1.8 8V that got the spec of the 16V (same seat trim elec pack and 15" BBSs) i much prefered the later 8Vs to the 16V to drive daily.

Thats more like it. About the right price too for a restored Y plate 1.8 only needs the black VW badge, red trim round the grill, silver trim in the door handles, cardboard trim on the top of the radiator to finish it off. The rear exhaust backbox also looks round from the photos so it may have the incorrect backbox on from a 1.6 .

You should have heard me shouting at the TV at Mike Brewer on that wheeler dealer show when he 'did up' a white mk1 GTI i was correcting him all the time LOL.

Owning one for 15 years and working on others that friends have had over the years you soon get to know them well lol.
