nbritt
I have a Bose Stereo in my B7 A4 and think the sound quality is pretty damn good. I have also read some fairly mediocre reviews and was keen to see what others rate their Bose systems out of 10?
Ari
I rate it highly. I think a lot of people associate a "good" stereo with lots of boom boom bass and tsss tsss treble. The Bose doesn't deliver this, it delivers clean clear powerful proper reproduction. It is the only stereo I've ever owned (home or car) upon which I leave all the settings (bass, treble, fader etc) completely flat. They got it spot on from the off. I'd give mine an easy 8, but the saloon is probably better as has a proper sub, the cab doesn't although manages well without.
lottiefox
My cab didn't have BOSE then the first TT did - what a difference! Clearer, better, louder!! I do set mine to + 4 on the Bass and +2 on treble but then I'm a groover , Ari is a Perry Como/Leo Sayer kinda guy..... (runs to hills) had an A3 3.2 yesterday for the day and the BOSE in that was absolutely amazing. Must have another dimension somewhere as it was even better than the TT/cabs I have heard. audikid
Last 3 Audi's of mine have had BOSE and the standard of the sound has dropped with each one. 1st a 2000 A6 was AMAZING, huge woofer (if that's the right terminology) in the boot. 2nd a 2002 A4 (B6) was less impressive with just a small woofer on the parcel shelf. Current 2004 A4 Cab with BOSE that I think is pretty pathetic. My boss also has a cab without BOSE and a back to back comparison is inconclusive. I think the BOSE has a clearer sound but you don't get the additional bass speaker in the cab - and it needs it. By comparison I've recently bought a 2004 Volvo S60 as a second car (dispite previous Volvo experience with an utterly horrific 340 at University) and the Dolby pro-logic set up (that comes as standard) is breathtaking. The clarity of the sound and the bass leaves the BOSE set up in the shadows. I'm really really keen to hear one of the new A8s with the optional Bang & Olufsen set up. Not sure how much it is over BOSE (but clearly going to be ££££££). Saw a demo on-line a while ago and the speakers lift up like cylinders from the dashboard. Might be time to buy another lotto ticket!! AK
Sokai
I have Boose in my 06 A4 and i´m a bit dissapointed. My old VW had amazing sound and i know for a fact that many cars now have much better than the A4. Volvo S80 for example i know have stunning sound so i can understand that you´re happy with your S60.
richy_uk
Bose in an A4 Cab, I'd rate it 6.5, but in my Boxster, 8.5. More speakers including subwoofers plus a bit more power I think. I've had mine cranked up to level 40 (max vol) with hardly a trace of distortion. My ears were ringing for 2 hours afterwards and I started to get a headache. Tizzy
Had BOSE in my last three cars, and it's got better each time. First was in my '04 Boxster S, which was OK (and considerably better than the poverty set-up that's standard with a Porsche). In parallel with that I had an company '04 A4 1.8T S-Line saloon, which was also good, although never seemed to have that much bass, until you wound it up above 15. Now on the S4 the Bose is the best of the lot thus far, with really rich tones esp. bass. Only difference I know between the Audi's is that the A4 was a Chorus head, and the S4 is a Symphony, which has a "middle" tone setting not present on the Chorus. Anyone know if the S4 set-up has heftier amps? NB: Also have the Bose lifestyle speakers on my home system, and that too is a marked improvement on my previous Arcam speakers! Chav
A4/S4 setup is the same. BOSE was excellent in my saloon. Slightly worse in the cab due to lack of dedicated sub, but the bass is still pretty good. Not bad at all. Let's say 7.5/
PetrolDave
I had Bose (pre Audio Pilot) in 2003 S4 Avant and I thought it was pretty good, then I went through a painful year with a non-Bose A4 TDi 130 Sport Avant, and now I've got a 2004 S4 Avant with Bose (the Audio Pilot version this time). On balance I prefer the Audio Pilot version of Bose (and both Bose versions over the standard) because to me it sounds much better and there's nothing to adjust - but with one caveat - in hot weather the microphone seems to get all screwed up and until the air con cools the car down after being parked on a hot day the volume and tone are up & down all over the place for 5 minutes. I've seen many posting on Audi World from people who don't get enough bass from their Bose, but with the bass set to one notch below maximum (I've got an RNS-E) I can get more bass than I need! I would almost go so far as to say my car sounds as good as my Bose Wave System at home. Remember Bose bass is NOT meant to shake all your internal organs, it's supposed to sound like the actual instrument!

CarMad
I would give it 7/10 for BOSE in mine. Its not bad but its not great. If you want to listen to the best have a go in A Volvo or a Lexus with the Mark Levison, they are just outstanding IMO and a class apart from BOSE easily. P_G
I'd give BOSE 7.5/10. Would have been higher until I heard the Bang & Olufson set up in the new A8 W12, now that is phenomenal. Wonder if they'll filter it down to us mere mortals and the smaller models. Must admit the BOSE in my S4 saloon is better than that in my S3 because of the sub behind the rear seats in the shelf, lacking in the S3. Wife complains it's too bassy then she only drive a basic Seat bless her, not used to decent systems.
Tizzy
Dave - was Audio-Pilot standard from launch on the V8 S4? - how do I know if it has it or not (mine is a late 03)- as I assume my A4 (2004) had Audio-Pilot and I know my Boxster S did - yet the S4's BOSE sounds the best of the three! I'd like a bit more bass on demand TBH. The only real let down is the treble can get a bit 'nasty' or harsh when you crank it up sometimes. This can be down to the old 'rubbish in rubbish out' though. BUB
Scotty
In the saloon I'd give it 7-8/10. In the Avant I'd five it 5-6/10. In my TT coupe I'd say 6-7/10.
UBM
In the cab - 5/10 In the avant - 6/10 - It needs far more oomph and base - and yes, I do have at Bass +6 and volume 30...
Chav
Maybe the recording level on your CD's is too low? Good quality recordings make a huge difference with any decent sound system.

Sponge
Bose speakers have always been overpriced and overrated in my opinion. I'm sure the same applies in this application.
Ari
Disagree there to be honest. Bose is nine Bose speakers and six Bose amps for £450. Admittedly there is the saving to Audi of not putting their own speakers etc in, but I reckon thats not too bad. Dread to think what the Bang & Olefson system in the A8 costs though...
