Mollox
Friend at work has just bought a delivery mileage 320d and the BMW dealer is trying to flog him all sorts of extras before he picks the car up at the weekend. They’re trying to get him into some kind of paint and interior treatment which preserves the exterior for 3 years (“guaranteed”!), meaning that it “only needs a hose down” to clean and also some sort of interior treatment meaning that any stains (they have a toddler) will wipe off? I think the dealer started at £399 for this “extra” Can anyone tell me WHAT it is, whether its actually any good, what it should be worth and if there are any alternatives please? They’re also trying to sell him a GAP policy at £20 pm and……tyre insurance!!!!! Ta
NewNiceMrMe
Thats SupaGuard they're trying to flog him - all BMW dealers do. Personally, I prefer to maintain my cars interior/exterior myself and whilst it is of value to those who may be of a 'can't be bothered' nature and it does indeed have protective qualities - well I don't understand anyone paying £399 for the full treatment (thats the price for exterior, interior, wheels, the lot). There are lots of alternatives. If he wants something like this you can buy a SupaGuard kit on eBay and then find someone to apply it for you if you can't be bothered yourself - for about a quarter of the price. Oh, and if it's on finance (which it must be) and they're selling GAP - tell them he'll go 50/50 on the price - they'll do it. It's a commission negotiable item. MattR32
Tried to flog me that Supaguard stuff too - No thanks. Bought GAP insurance though - Seemed worth it as my 4 month old 8k mile Astra is probably now worth about ten quid.
garcon magnifique
£399 equates to 33 visits to my local valet place for a decent inside & out & polish. Not worth it - it only gets done about every other month...
Torino101
Sorry for my ignorance but what is GAP insurance??
MattR32
If you total the car or someone else rights it off for you (!), your insurance will pay what THEY think it's worth at the time. Say you paid £16k as I did, in about a year I'd probably get about £12k max. In two years £10k (I'm guessing here BTW). With GAP insurance, you get the price you paid for it when you bought it new. Mook
£399 Get the car polished by an independent professional with Meguiars for £100 or so and that will sort that one out. Audi do a similar thing with their new and second hand cars. And £20 pm for GAP - get a life! You can buy it independently for less than that. The treatment and GAP are yet more ways for dealers to squeeze more gross profit on a deal. A bit like going to Comet for a £499 TV (or whatever) and paying an extra £250 for 3 year cover. No thanks. Did I mention doing stuff independently...
MattR32
We got GAP for under £300 all in. The polish bobbins supposedly protects the car with a layer of rare Andean muntjack saliva and the interior in lined with heavy duty Llamergiar down. I just Turtle wax mine and use a hoover. andrepaul99
GAP insurance is worth a look, bearing in mind this only costs the dealer about £200 so haggle on price, oh and make sure its return to invoice insurance, as GAP will only cover the finance settlement, Return to Invoice insurance normally does both. Supaguard is only any use if you cant be bothered to polish your own car, as it protects the paintwork for 3 years meaning you dont have to polish it yourself, If you dont mind polishing your car then dont bother with supaguard its expensive for what it does, the dealer pays about £75 for this product so haggle on price, you can buy alternatives at Halfords. Try Autoglym paint sealant (£6.99) for the outside, and just plain old scotchguard for the carpets, for leather go for Autogylm leather care cream (8.99) which is basically the same stuff as the supaguard anyway. But £399 is too much for this product in my opinion
