Hi

I just bought a 2004 911 with 12000 Km on the clock and to my surprise it needs new tyres on the rear (actually to sellers surprise also) - current tyres are Michelin Pilot Sport. If anyone has any advice on tyres for this car that would be much appreciated - i dont plan on being an F1 driver so most important to me is less noise and good wear - i mainly do a city commute and have some fun on the weekends. I havent been able to find much on this topic anywhere, sorry if its on here somewhere !

Thanks!

Hi there. Mine is a 2004 C4S Cab, still on the original Michelin Pilot Sports.

It's done 9000 miles and three track days, and the rears are looking iffy - 3-4mm only - so they're being replaced tomorrow. The fronts are ok - 6mm ish.

Bear in mind that Michelin say the legal 1.6mm depth applies to the tread pattern in the middle (where they put the wear bars). I thought it was 75% of the whole tyre width and started to panic, but in fact the shallower shoulder is not part of tread pattern. So you may have more left than you think - I did.

As regards recomendations, the options are mainly the Pilot Sport, Pirellis or Bridgestones. My understanding is that the Pirelli is a superb handling tyre but wears quickly. That rules it out for me - the Pilot Sports have handled well so far but I wouldn't want to replace more often than this. The Bridgestone is said to be a bit harder wearing but less grip.

My tyre fitter swears by the Pilot Sport and mutters about it being the best in the business bar none, and I've liked them so far. Also, as the fronts are still ok I don't feel like replacing them now and I don't feel like having different patterns on the car.

So its two more Pilot Sports for me...

thanks for the advice, i think you are right about the michelin although they are the most expensive too A$975 = GBP 409! On my tyres the canvas was starting to show on the inside shoulder but tread was ok in the middle and outside shoulder, however overall unroadworthy. I was told the rear wheels need alignment on a regular basis too get maximum out of the tyres........a lesson here, i think it is worth a few bucks to get this done !
