Shorty
the drivers door lock has stopped working, so i took the lock out and tested it.the key turns but the back of the lock doesn't so i assume a new lock is the answer. the question is does anything need to be reprogrammed.(as the new lock will need a new key) ? my car is a mk4 golf 1.4S does not have remote central locking. did think about swapping locks over but passenger wont fit drivers side
pritesh
do u have an imob on the car? if so and it is coded through the Key I guess all that too will need changing. also if your chaning the lock...what about the ignition barrel? as ur new lock will have a new cut key but the barrel will fit the old key? Shorty
yes it has an immobiliser, didn't even give the ignition barrel a thought.i take it that it is a VW garage job for the reprogramming.
pritesh
it is a re-programming jobie, but if u know someone who has a vag-com then maybe they could do it for u? so as it has an immobiliser, the key will have a small chip/similar thing, so the new key will need to be programmed, and then you will have to replace the Ignition barrel so that the new key fits unless you fancy carrying 2 keys? ...personally not! if you cant get in touch with someone local who has a vag com then i suggest sourcing a local independant...it may be cheaper. Also dont quote me on this but...a mate of mine had to replace the locks, barrels on his Honda and he had to tell his insurence company. (it made no difference to his preimum) as i sed dont quote me on this bit...but would suggest gettin clarification on that part.
Rustynuts
Why not just get a new lock matched to your existing key? Dealers may be able to do this for you, and no need for any new keys or reprogramming.

pritesh
Best bet is to just really have a chat with the tech at a dealer and see what they say then make a choice based on finance, time etc

Shorty
i emailed my local vw garage and the reply was the barrel does not come with keys because it is made to the keys which you already have. .I take it that they will need the keys in advance to do this, if not how do they match them to the lock .cheers
Rustynuts
There should be a plastic tag which came with the original keys (has like a scratch card silver strip on it) which could have the relevant data on it. Or they may be able to order a barrel from your VIN Number. The days of someone taking a barrel apart and rebuilding it to suit a specific key are long gone, I should think. Mulkbear should know what they need.

mulkbear
To late but you can retunble a new lock barrel to fit your car (from a scrap yard) but the new lock could be worn like yours
