Snoopy
I was wondering what the ratio of 3 to 5 door owners of MK5 GTIs are on here. So thought i would start a poll.

peugeot6
Hi, we only get the 5 door in New Zealand, I wanted the 3 as it looks more sporty, but NZ importers also agents for Audi, and wanted to keep the 3 door for the A3. Our cars come from South Africa. Australia only gets the 5 door as well. Still a great car though.

OzGTI
This should be interesting. I made the point on another thread that i thought there were lots of three doors represented here, especially as the situation in Australia is that there are very few three door cars sold. Most Aussie cars are large or mid sized four doors or these days SUV's. The southern hemisphere 5 door only supply situation might skew things a little but by the looks of things to date the 3 doors might still take the largest share. IMO (and while I don't actually have the choice of the three or five door downunder) the five door looks the better balanced anyway.
zoomx3
I agree with "better balanced" looks Oz, but somehow a 3 door GTI seems to say, "I’m serious, watch me go!". Unfortunately like you say, we didn’t get a choice down here as I'd have gone for the 3 door, but that is because i don’t have a family to lug around and want to “feel young”. However with the 5 dr, the option of being able to take friends out, chuck groceries in the back easily without having to open the boot is attractive enough. P.S. The driver’s door is starting to creak. Aagrh.!
OzGTI
I agree the 3 doors look more overtly sporty than the 5 door, but I think the long line from the edge of the back window to the front has the effect of elongating the nose. In general a design feature in cars of which I'm not overly fond. Anyway each to their own, we didn't get the choice but in any case I would have opted for the five door - carting friends and an increasing aged mother. I've had one or two rattles - one in the door and one in the sunroof. On both occasions they disappeared with the next piece of bumpy road - which if I remember rightly is how they arrived in the first place. Anyway neither rattle has come back to date - so I hope your disappears with the next bump.

OzGTI
Good for you... Back to work now..I've recharged the creative juices and I've helped keep the TSN site 'warm' for our northern hemisphere colleagues for a while!!
RedRobin
Thanks for keeping it 'warm' Oz!! I always find you and zoom have something interesting to say in your posts and deliver it before my breakfast! 3 doors looks sportier than 5 but 5 door is more practical according to your lifestyle. At least VeeDub have offered us the choice ....VXRs etc don't!!
silentandy
50/50 at the moment!
GTiMK5
I dont find the 3 door impractical at all, I have kids and find it easier to get them in and out, it is safer for them as they cant open the doors and access to the rear for adults is good too. Obviously the 5 door does have some advantages of practicality but the 3 door is far from impractical and imo looks much better. I had a 5 door MK 5 (not GTI) before the GTI and in the 8 months I have owned the GTI I have not missed the 5 door practicality once.
RedRobin
I hope you don't think I meant that the 3dr wasn't practical....I was only meaning that the 5dr is even more 'practical'. I would have chosen the 3dr but the lady-of-the-house my 14 going on 24yo daughter was insistent we have rear passenger doors and she was right when considering our particular needs. The point is that VW have designed the two versions extremely well and we have the option.
GTiMK5
Red, No not at all. Obviously the 5 door is more practical, but the 3 door is still very practical too. I guess a lot of people deciding (especially with young kids) will automatically choose the 5 door, so what I am trying to say is dont assume, try the 3 door because it is more practical than most probably think for a 3 door and if you can live with it and prefer the looks then get it. Snoopy
I do agree with others that the 3 door looks better. The 5 door the more i look at it from the side it looks stretched at the rear door location. Like the rear doors are massive compared to the fronts and look abit out of proportion to the front doors. Especially as my car sits in a driveway with a pair of 5 door SEATs (ibiza & leon) whos side profile looks more in proportion to me than the golfs. But thats just my opinion. The pole results so far show its nearly the same quite a interesting to me too see this.
RedRobin
Damn! GTiMK5, I wish you had posted these exact words back in May when I was ordering....You could have helped me persuade my daughter into us getting a 3 door! I'm much happier than I expected to be though regarding the looks of the 5 door.
GTiMK5
Think that proves the point, people naturally count the 3 door out too easily. You will just have to order a 3 door R32 then Red
scotw
I did the same, discounted the 3 door straight away. No kids, but I find having a coupe just now that the very long doors bug me and I'm often placing a bag in the back seat (training stuff, laptop etc) so its annoying. The 3 does look that bit sportier but one of the reasons I like the GTi is that the 5 door is still an option on such a good looking, well driving car. The other option was an A3 sportback (bad ride but nice looking). The 1 series was a laugh, Im only 5'8 and I couldn't fit in the back comfortably, my kit bag would have been all that fitted! RedRobin
[ QUOTE ] You will just have to order a 3 door R32 then Red [/ QUOTE ] ....Who? Me? Funny you should say that! Imo that shiny front on the Mk5 R32 looks better on a Red car. The Mk4 R32 was what attracted me to Golfs in the first place but then the GTI was launched. Who knows, I have no specific plans but would defo consider a later generation/build Mk5 R32 sometime in the future. Have been invited for a test drive anyway next month. They don't do 5 doors do they?
GTiMK5
Pretty sure they do both 3 and 5 door Red.
