Just wondered if anyone has bothered specing a sunroof on their GTI's ?

What are they like ?

I used to have sunroofs on my cars then stopped when I started getting Aircon but was wondering if I might spec one again.

Do you get any buffeting with them ? especially low speed around town etc

Cheers

Mine has a sunroof.... I really like it... after having several BMs with dark interiors and no sunroof its a nice change... I usually only have it open while pottering around town or at low speeds as when you get to speeds of 3 figures it does buffer a bit... but its nice to have a bit of occasional sun! No buffering at low speeds though...

I love sunroofs. It's as close as i can get to a cabrio without feeling like an arse. I love it on hot days, because i can open everything and really get a breeze coming through. I've never bought this "i've got climate so i don't need it argument" they're totally different IMO.

It's like saying, i don't need windows that open, i've got climate.

anyway, each to their own!

The sunroof in the Mk5 GTI is the best one I have ever experienced! It's quite far back in relation to your head and provides excellent ventilation. At about 30 mph you can get an air pressure 'wobble' but this can be cured by opening a side window a fraction. It anyway disappears as your speed increases and I have comfortably driven at 80 without even realising the sunroof was open.

It's also useful to be able to stick your hand out the roof with a thumbs up 169144-ok.gif

Just a couple of additional notes:

By only tilting the rear of the sunroof you get good natural air ventilation.

The glass panel is very heavily tinted, so even when closed but with the inner roof lining panel left open, you get some additional natural lighting. I never ever close that inner lining panel.

Because the windscreen is so big 169144-ok.gif the sunroof is unusually far back and so this gives a greater degree of direct sun shading.

No-one seems to be able to find fault with the sunroof....If you like sunroofs this is a good'un 169144-ok.gif169144-ok.gif .

Can I weight in here on the Oirish side too... guess for once we get an extra that UK does not, although as pointed out by Ken and Barry the UK get air con. We can get a reduction of approx €1000 if we drop sunroof and get full climate control.

Me being so excited about getting a GTI that I had to get climate control and keep the sunroof!(Having wanted one since my neighbour had a MK1 when I was still running around in shorts! - Mind you, there were about 4 attempts to take his MK1 - one morning it was outside our gate as the thiefs had attempted to bounce it down the road)

sunroof is a definate.. nothing like having a suroof open on a sunny day, shame its not a bit bigger though.

as other people have said the air con is a totally different aspect and has totally different uses. i like having light in my car and never shut the sun visor.
