Sparky
I've got a new Windows 2003 server setup with the Windows SMTP service that sends out emails. It sort of works, but not fully. The SMTP Server has a domain called "TestServer" for example. Emails to any address get sent quickly and without an errors. However, if I try sending an email to "[email protected]" - nothing appears to happen. No errors. Just no mail. I've been told that I might have setup this server as a PDC and that it's trying to handle the emails locally, but I know I've not set it as a PDC. Also, he's told me to turn off Microsoft networking Can anyone help? I'm losing hair and sleep over this one!
John32
Hi Sparky Just to understand are you configuring the SMTP connector in IIS? What would you expect to happen to the email? ie where would/should the server route email within its own domain? John
Sparky
Hi, Yes, IIS SMTP component. It's a server at a hosting centre so sending out emails from itself. We have a hosted POP3 account (provided by the hosting centre), so "local" emails, should be going there to be collected by staff using Outlook - pointed at this POP box. Instead, these emails just vanish. Or at least the log files indicate it's sending OK. Emails sent to any other address go out fine.
John32
OK, is the server configured to send email via dns lookup or smart host? If DNS could you try a nslookup from the server to see what MX records it returns for the problem domain. How much details do you get from the log files? could you post or PM them. Sparky
Sadly, the log files aren't configured properly - only went in last night. It's giving me the SMTP codes, such as 240 (which is good), so as far as reading the logs, the mail is going... but where?! It's not using a Smart host, so guess it's DNS. John32
Could you run 'nslookup' from a command prompt then 'set type=mx' and type the problem domain. This should then return where you server thinks mail should be delivered, these problem often seem to be DNS related. Also could you send me an email from the server? if so I can check the logs at my end, might help? will PM address if possible. John
Sparky
Cheers John. I'll try that now and get back to you.
Sparky
I think I've solved it. In the IIS panel, where you create new Domains, I entered our website name, without either the www or the .com as I thought it was a Friendly Name, like each website you create in IIS. It turns out it's not. You need the proper website name in there. Thanks for your prompt assistance though John. Good to know there are always people on here willing to help. I'll just go crawl under a small rock now....

Frodo
See my normal response to any Windows problem at the moment is "...permissions or DNS..." strangely this cover 90% of problems
Sparky
So I'd have fallen into your other 10% of responses then as it was neither? The problem was between the chair and the keyboard.
