garcon magnifique
Just because this is in the Audi forum, I voted M5. Depends which version of the M5 though, really.
pureaudi
if it was out of the old M5 and the RS 6 id defo go for the RS 6 but out of the new M5 and the RS 6 i duno, the new M5 and the RS 6 both have the same 0-60 time of 4.7 Secs and you can pick up a used RS 6 for around £28k
Frodo
I know nothing about the M5 but I guess it doesn't have 4-wheel drive? In which case it has to be the RS6
NewNiceMrMe
This test has been done. To 60, 100 and 1/4 mile - it was the M5. It should be said the 0-62 run was nigh on identical (0.08 or something like that). If I remember correctly you've got the M5 at 507bhp and a weight of 1755kg, with the RS6 at 450bhp and a weight of 1840kg - so it was always going to be close anyway. New RS6 may well have the 5.2V10 from the new S8
garcon magnifique
[ QUOTE ] How about round some corners? [/ QUOTE ] The old M5 would be quicker round just about any track in the dry than the RS6. The new M5 would blitz it. But when you're dealing with big cars like this, outright performance is only one of the ways you'd measure it. In every day practical terms, the 4wd of the RS6 is arguably better. ONe other thing - the popular version of the RS6 in the UK is the Avant, and you can't get an M5 Touring over here.
Scotty
[ QUOTE ] New RS6 may well have the 5.2V10 from the new S8 [/ QUOTE ] The S6 has that lump (due to be launched in May). Maybe it will be tuned differently.

[/ QUOTE ] Torque vs weight is the bit req'd for acceleration in'nit? Transmission losses on the 4wd wont help either will it Edit: Oh! I am an Audi man but would prolly (voted for) the 5 I would imgine its a better drive
NewNiceMrMe
The RS6 puts out more torque I think, 413lbs versus 385lbs, I think.
sitas3
I'm considering the old M5 for my next car (before all the oil runs out!). They look great value at the moment for what looks like a terrific car!

badgera
I think the M5 is a fantastic car, but I'm not sure it would be the one I'd go for. Perhaps I'm getting swayed by the fact it's winter, but RWD although fun in the right conditions, for the most part the Audi would be better at putting the power down in real world situations. Realistically the present (well departed) RS6 was on the previous gen platform and the M5 is shiney and new so ultimate performance and handling will go the BMW's way. As for the new RS6, now your talking. Even if it uses the V10 from the S8 without any change in spec it's has more torque than the M5 and and single output of 450 rather than a switched 400 - 507. So again real world would put the RS6 as the "faster". Being picky also means that the wipers on the 5 series wind me up, they are still configured for LHD. Never driven one so I don't know how much of a problem than is, but it always gets to me when I see one, BMW being tight!! It's not really a choice I've had to make, but to be honest neither will disapoint.
NewNiceMrMe
I just don't like the looks of the new M5. Can't get used to it at all, no matter how hard I try to like it.
P_G
RS6+ for me please until new RS6 turns up..... like I can afford either!!

I'll have to go see my-man up the road from me. He has a 505bhp RS6 Avant. I'll see if I can borrow it for a decade or two?
