[Audi A3/S3] 99 ron fuel

All I can say is that when I took my car to be re-mapped, after it had been done I was asked by the technician what petrol I was using. I was fairly new to the modding scene back then and I answered just normal supermarket unleaded fuel. When the said technician picked his self up off the floor after rolling about in fits of laughter, he reckoned I was around 40 bhp down on what the car should've been.

Ever since that day I have used optimax and millers. So I can't really offer you any other answer apart from if it's good enough for the tuners to recommend 98 ron (at least) then it's good enough for me...

Oh and when you open your petrol cap of a S3, it does say inside on the sticker to use min 98 ron.....

And I will be looking at my local Tescos for the 99 ron fuel when I need to fill up again.

On my fuel flap it says 95/98 ron. I know that the 98 is a better quality fuel with all it's additives etc. but my main question is: Is the price difference worth the extra cost when you do a lot of miles? Is there really that much difference in performance cos I didn't really notice much when I tried it. Is it supposed to be noticable as soon as you put it in? Or has it got to clean the engine a bit first? Would the general consensus be go for optimax regardless as it's better for the engine in the long run?

Sorry for all the questions but I'd like to get to the bottom of the whole octane thing.

I was told that after 3 or 4 tank fulls of optimax I would be able to tell the difference. Well to be honest, after 3 or 4 tank fulls, it didn't really jump out and shout out that I was going faster or my car was performing any better but that is beacuse I suppose it was a gradual transition between normal unleaded and optimax.

I reckon if I was to put normal unleaded in my car now I would be able to tell the difference.

Now as for using Millers.......That's another story confused.gif

the higher octane rating lets the ignition advance more as it reduces pinking. The ECU will do this gradually hence it can take a few tanks to take advantage. It will be more noticable if you then go back to 95 as the ECU will retard it instantly to avoid pinking.

Bit late to the party, so to speak, but yes, Optimax is the way to go. The engine-management is, indeed, smart enough to know what you're feeding it and will, as others have said, retard or advance the spark accordingly. Not a massive difference, but hell, I want *all* my ponies!

Intereting to see some of the comments on this post re supermarket fuel... I have been using Tesco's Super 99 since my local started stocking it a couple of months ago.

Yesterday I had my car remapped by Forge and we did some power runs logging igniton retard with VAGCOM. My car running at peak power was backing off no more than 1/2 degree on the Tesco fuel. Same engine and map on a Golf Mkv Gti running on BP ultimate or Optimax backs off 3 degrees. Interesting eh and I can think of no other reason for this other than the fuel is better...
