frsygti
Hello, Now that winter is near us and the snow here in Iceland is starting fall down I have to buy winter tyres and alloys. I have 16" winter alloys from my 2003 Passat and a was wondering if they were big enough to fit the GTI? What is the minimun size that fits him? RedRobin
I'm not an expert on this subject but doesn't the GTI have different wheel fixing bolt arrangements? Your dealer would/should know. By the way, everyone here was keen to see photos of a GTI in Iceland....Have you got some please?
chriswastle
You need to check the offset ( ET number) if its the same as the GTI wheel then you will be ok, as long as the rolling circumference is roughly the same. The PCD will be the same ( fixing arrangement)
frsygti
I was told that the offset was the same, not from the dealer tough I was thinkin about the brakes, if 16" will be to small. Do you guys know of any GTI with 16" alloys I have loads of pictures in my computer but I'm not happy with them so I'll have to take another picture day later. But there are two that are ok so I'll let them go send some more later. btw, excuse my english
RedRobin
Thanks frsyGTi....Those photos look excellent. The clear light of Iceland does well for the Red. Lefthand drive of course. Your car is similar to mine except on 18s. Your English is good....Better than some English people!
frsygti
Thank you The modding will have to wait for a few weeks/months, but the next thing will be Milltek exhaust
RedRobin
Ah! You mentioned Milltek! That's fatal when talking with me! As your car is 235bhp it would make sense for you to go for a Turbo-back Hi-Flow - It's much more efficient for the GTI turbocharged engine, especially when tuned. Whether you go for Resonated (quieter) or Non-Resonated is up to your personal preference. I posted some comparitive loudness decibel tests in another thread on Millteks here. Turbo-back will add 15-20 bhp just by being efficient. You should be alright with standard brakes and suspension up to around 250 bhp -ish. I'm not a real expert but am sharing information I have learnt from virtually living in this forum!
frsygti
yes, I've read most of the Milltek thread and my conclusion was Turbo-Back with Resonated (not a big fan of loud exhaust) But do I have do buy the whole quad system also or can I use the OEM double exhaust look? GTiMK5
Hi Frys, welcome mate, You can go for the OEM look.
RedRobin
Milltek will usually supply their twin pipe which looks similar to OEM but is slightly bigger. You won't need to change the rear black plastic valance like I did. My Quads were a special.

Snoopy
[ QUOTE ] I was thinkin about the brakes, if 16" will be to small. [/ QUOTE ] Why not just try one on and see if it fits? I will be looking for winter wheels too so please let us know if it fits or not.
frsygti
Yes I'm going to do that. Thought I might try to save some time by asking you guys but I'll post here when I have the results
DB6Vantage
According to the Michelin site, you can fit 16s on the GTi. I currently have Pilot Alpin tyres for the winter, but I will fit something else to the golf. What tyres do you use in winter? I read a review and top rater where a Good Year and followed by a Dunlop.
silentandy
I'm sure I saw a GTI on 16's over on http://www.golf5gti.net/ in the gallery.
frsygti
The tyres I have are from GoodYear and with nails Used them last winter and they are very good. And thanks for the info regarding my question BTW, just ordered few minutes ago a G-Tech gauge, looking forward to see what numbers the GTI is really doing
DB6Vantage
With nails...lucky you! We are allowed nails in winter, but not while driving through the motorway, so I will go with normal winter tyres....
