shark_90
After fitting the Phatbox, I've realised that having correct ID3 tags is pretty imperative for it to work properly and reliably. I have loads and loads of crap in my collection, a lot of which has been downloaded and subsequently has useless tags. And I've found this: The Musicbrainz Tagger It identifies your tracks by using sound signatures, renames them, ID3's them, and then organises them into a file structure. All completely automatically! Ok there are some it doesn't know, but as it's a community based thing, if you spend the time to enter the correct tag, it uploads it to their server for the next person who tries to autotag that particular song. Genius! Out of my collection of about 1500, it's been about 60% completely automatic, 20% it thinks it knows, but wants comfirmation, and 20% it doesn't know, but has suggestions for. Not bad in 20 minutes! The best thing about it is that it's free, although I will most definately be making a donation, I hope those of you who find it useful will too

Omi
Ben, you TWUNT! - I'm still sitting here tagging my 30GB of MP3... Serves me right for having eclectic tastes I guess.

Snail
Well, i had a play with it last night. It only seemed to pick up about 5 of the 100 albums i ran through it. Most i could manually enter the artist details, and tag them from there, and some it couldn't pick up at all. Seems a lot better for artist albums, rather than compilations. Still proabably the best tool i've seen.
shark_90
Snail I think the reasoning for that is because there's a conflict and it doesn't know which album to assign the track to? A lot of the ones mine didn't know are compilation tracks. Take Motorhead - The Ace Of Spades as an example: MusicBrainz TRM Collision There are multiple tracks that match for this TRM id. Examine the tracks below to see if the track you are looking for is listed. If so, click on the tag icon in front of the track to tag the track. If none of the tracks below apply, click on lookup link at the bottom of this page. E:\Music\My Music\Albums\Various\The Best Air Guitar Album In The World... Ever! [Disk 2 of 2]\08-Motorhead _ Ace Of Spades.mp3 66% relevance Artist: Motörhead (Motörhead) Album: The Best Air Guitar Album in the World... Ever! (disc 2) Track: Ace of Spades Track Num: 8 Duration: 2:45 TRMs: 0 trm ids -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 39% relevance Artist: Motörhead (Motörhead) Album: Superhits of the 80s (disc 1) Track: Ace of Spades Track Num: 16 Duration: 2:45 TRMs: 0 trm ids -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 38% relevance Artist: Motörhead (Motörhead) Album: Absolute Rock Classics (disc 1) Track: Ace of Spades Track Num: 9 Duration: 2:46 TRMs: 0 trm ids -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 36% relevance Artist: Motörhead (Motörhead) Album: Ace of Spades Track: Ace of Spades Track Num: 1 Duration: 2:48 TRMs: 0 trm ids The copy I have is from the Best Air Guitar Album, but of course it's been on 3 other albums (Motorhead's own and 2 other compilations) and it doesn't know how to categorise it. I guess in a way it's spot on. Out of all the tracks I've got, there's only about 10 it really couldn't work out
Scotty
I've not used it yet but the above doesn't seem good. I've got that track on 5 Albums excluding the original Motorhead album. Protect the Innocent Rock Anthems Rock Classics The Best Rock Album in the World Ever The Metal Box and I'm sure it's on a lot of others. I wonder why it only got three? shark_90
I dunno. But it's a whole lot better then listening to each track, and editing the tags yourself IMO!
Scotty
I've had a bit of a play now and it picked up loads and loads of albums. Quite a bit more than three!
Daz
If your MP3's are already grouped by CD then try Tag & Rename. You can choose from the freedb music database or Amazon's database to find the tag details of each CD. Has worked with 99% of all my CD's.
shark_90
Good call Daz, I'll have a play with that one too. Should be good for the compilations.
Regulator
does this also work with single mp3's ... as most of mine are all over the place and it will take me ages to move them ... Identifying cd's are no use as that will take me forever with about 60gb of music!
shark_90
Regulator - for that you need to use the original program that I posted, MusicBrainz Tagger. I only have a relatively small collection, but it was 80% automatic and the ones that it was unsure about were a doddle to select from the suggestions. Regulator
so, that will tag the tracks even if i dont have the complete album?
shark_90
Yes. It works by sound signatures on a track-by-track basis
