Rear window demister - problem on E46 Touring?

My 2000 330d Touring has a strange fault with the rear window demister which I have only just noticed - I haven't had cause to use the demister since buying the car in May.

Basically, every conductor on the left hand side (which is the live side) has corroded at the exact point where the window presses against the rubber seal. There are small melted grooves in the seal corresponding to each conductor.

I scratched away the corroded conductors and used PCB silver paint to mend them but am concerned that the paint is going to get hot and melt the seal - there is a 1V drop across the paint patches joins, which are about an inch long and the paint becomes uncomfortable hot to touch.

The corroded patches are actually underneath the black matt surround on the window so its not really visible from the outside.

Has anyone else come across this problem - is it a known problem with E46 Tourings (and possibly 5-series Tourings which use the same window)?

I'm loathe to shell out £400 for a new back window just because of this...

Other than that the car has been brilliant of course - can't get enough of the torque.

Nick

The wife's 51 plate Touring is in the dealer's today having the whole rear screen rplaced under warranty for exactly the same thing.

Noticed it with the frosts last week - only 1 wire working. We bought the car about the same time as you Nick but as it was from a main dealer it has 12 months warranty.

There obviously is a prob with the Touring's glass hatch design - what I don't understand is BMW have plenty experience of such hatches. My 10 year old E34 Touring has a similar hatch but doesn't have the problem.

Don't know yet what the glass costs for the E46, but the dealer's receptionist told my wife it is frighteningly expensive! NOP though!

Good luck with it Nick.
