Sparky
Does anyone know if Sky+ boxes restrict what you can "Export" out of the box onto DVD? We've got a VCR and sometimes export movies/docs onto tape, but I've been looking to replace this machine for ages. DVD recorders look good prices now, but would Sky not protect things like films from being saved to DVD? Is it only BoxOffice films I'm thinking are restricted? I'm assuming whatever is on our Sky Planner can be exported? Cheers.
Frodo
Yes I believe they do on Box office and a few other channels by using Macroguard or something like that.
Snail
I've got a philips DVD recorder, just select "copy" from the sky+ planner, and everything else happens automatically. I've only had boxoffice films not enable recording, everything else is fine!
Sparky
Sweet! Thanks. Now I just need to find a good DVD recorder.
Frodo
I think the Panasonic range is very good. Check out the forums on www.digitalspy.com
Snail
I will say Sparky, the quality of recordings from Sky is average. I admit my recorder is a couple of years old, and im not using great cables, but your never going to replace buying DVDs with recording from Sky. Frodo
Agree Sky don't broadcast at the same bitrate as would come from the DVD. But the recording from the Sky+ box to the DVD recorder should be identical assuming you are using RGB signal on the lead from Sky+ to the DVD recorder. CarMad
Sparky Depending on your budget I would look to get one with a freeview tuner built in now as well. Sony do a cracking duel tuner DVD / HDD recoder for £500 its the 510 I think.
Sparky
I'd like a slim DVD recorder, pref a Sony, but was looking at some of them and they are too big - or ugly. I've not yet seen a 510 as this is the new replacement unit isn't it? They've discontinued 2 models that I was looking at this weekend. Snail - that's something I'd not considered. I do have a Sky+ unit which the quality seems good. I assume that when playing back a DVD I've made, it will look like it did when broadcast? It shouldn't lose any quality in the process? I've been looking at some £60 scart leads, so they should maintain as much as possible. What bitrate does Sky run at then?

Or would I still benefit from having the HDD? Budget isn't really an issue.
CarMad
Yeah I think they have a lower model that doesn't have the HDD and freeview. Will have a look in the Mag I read it in am sure it had both in it.
CarMad
Doh slight mistake... The Sony 710 has duel tuners etc and 160gb hard disk for £500 The Sony 510 has 80Gb HDD and Dvd writer but its £400 Both are award winners in this months What HiFi, with the Panasonic DMR-ES10 best for under £250 at £200. All prices should be cheaper in Empire Direct or similar. As for do you need HD recording.. no not really but if you do want to record a third program quickly for any reason it will be very easy to do. Or watch another a decent quality with the Freeview tuners if Sky is already tied up. Might look at one myself soon, have sky+ too but never seem to use the video recorder anymore but want to save some things off sky occasionally. Sparky
That's the reason for getting the DVD-r. To export programmes that we wish to keep, to DVD. Not really using it on a daily basis I guess, therefore wondering if the Sony's £500 price tag warrants the money. Mind you, as always, these things end up getting used far more than planned. roohster
If you've already got SKY+, you don't really need a dvd with a built in HDD... I'm in the same situation, got myself a Panasonic ES10 and get excellent results.
Sparky
I'll have a look at the Panasonic ones. Does anyone know if the Sky HDD box will be a new Sky+ box? I'd assume it will be. We're on the list to upgrade when it's out next year.

CarMad
I think thats a 510 not a 710. And yes Sky HD is going to be on a new box.
Sparky
Oh. I got it from here: http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/88825/art/sony/rdr-hx710-dvd-writer-with.html Looks like the 710, as the 510 is bigger, or have the silly French got it wrong?
CarMad
They have indeed got it wrong. Thats the 710 from the Sony site, sorry couldn't find anything bigger.
Sparky
That's the 910 http://www.sony.de/content/attachment/rdr_hx710.jpg http://www.sony.de/content/attachment/rdr_hx910.jpg Sorry, massive pics, but the model numbers show bottom right, so the 710 is the one shown on their website. Make sure IE doesn't reduce the pic sizes. You might need to wait for the little expander button. Or is it?!
CarMad
Nope they aren't right. Those might be the numbers used in Germany but not here. If you have a look in this months What HiFi awards issue they have a picture of both. The 710 has a DVB symbol on the bottom left and its really easy to read the 710 num on the botton right. Plus there are video + symbols etc. that are also possibly unique to this market. I must admit it is confusing, the 710 and 910 look the same, but the 510 is deffo different looks wise in the UK. Check out the sony website. Sony DVD recorders. Edited to add. Watch out for buying it on pixmania. You might not get the UK version that has the Freeview tuners in if thats what you want to take advantage of. Doesn't seem to be any mention of it on the site. As others have found out they have got cameras with French instructions only and nothing for the UK.. you can download them or buy them as extras. The same model at Empire is £414, they are normally pretty close but I would suspect that is why they appear wrong, but it is very confusing. Chav
No mate, if you look at the name of the pic in your above sony dvd recorders link, you'll see they've used the pic of the 910 instead of the 710! I guess sony's web guys have made a feck up!
Chav
So this is the 910.... (check out the image name too) and this is the 710...
Sparky
I'm confused Damn it Sony. Fire your website guys. The URL for both the 710 and 910 are the same. http://productimages.sony-europe.com/RDR-HXD910_HEADON_im.gif
CarMad
[ QUOTE ] So this is the 910.... (check out the image name too) and this is the 710... [/ QUOTE ] Nope Chav they are the pics of the models on the continent. The UK spec have different graphics and spec with freeview tuners that they don't have in France which will be the model on sale at pixmania. Trust me they are different models on offer in the UK. The pics in What HiFi are right, as are the pretty poor ones on the UK SOny site. I think even the Empire ones are wrong. As it happens the 710 on Pixmania is a good buy if you want the large HD etc. but not the Freeview and the EPG etc. But if you do I would look elsewhere.
