Hi, i tried sending a PM but not sure if it's gone hence the post.

This section is looking good, thank you. I would suggest we need 3 more sub forums; General Ferrari Discussion, Events & Off Topic. Not sure we need seperate V8/V12 sections , tho it might keep SteveF quite wink.gif

I agree with you on the V8/V12 thing, the off topic on here is Lounge of Joy, events go in the meets section, which is taking off pretty well at the mo.

Jon,

i would prefer it if we had our own O/T and Events section. We can always cross post to link with other guys on here.

Does this forum have a "stealth" mode? It's a little hard to have this on screen at work with all the big banners and avatars etc.

[/ QUOTE ]

Click into your preferences through your My Home ( Shortcut ) Scroll down and set the last 3 options to “no” and that should remove sigs, avatars etc.

We were working on a stylesheet that would make tyresmoke a black and white dead ringer for excel a while back but so much else to do first – eventually! grin.gif

Ahh..do you mean you’d like an email notification of replies? If so I think subscribing does that (never used it myself!) otherwise, new posts are shown with a dark highlight and bold text in the posts list and in the category list there’s a little number next to the forum title with the number of new posts 169144-ok.gif

Why do you want a seperate events section confused.gif

Surely the meets forum is good enough for that?

Same with LoJ for off topic....

There's already an established group of 50 or so users from Fchat. They know what they like and resist change fiercly. Plus, it'll all end up booting off ! You'll soon get bored with our drivel. ices_blah.giftongue.gif

you might have a point actually, my intial thoughts were the same as omi's, but then I remembered wht you lot were like before. Meets should definately be in the meets section but a ferrari O/T section would be best......especially if steve makes his way over.

Can someone explain the brekkie pic for Omi, I can't do it justice and I don't have it on this PC.

Hi Tony, I thought I’d reply to your pm here as its relevant and interesting to all.

I’d just like to say that we’re really pleased with how many of you have popped up over here – I hope that’s a vote of confidence after a first impression of Tyresmoke. Its up to us to make sure that Tyresmoke is somewhere you’d like to stay so we’re all ears. I also appreciate how cosy and reassuringly familiar certain communities become and how we’re all naturally disinclined to accept change. I hate it! wink.gif

What I would say though is give it a go, bear with it and see how you get on…

Tyresmoke is a little different to most forums in that its not make/model specific but rather caters for a whole spectrum of performance cars. We think this approach creates the best sense of community and makes the forums the most fun but it also means that you have to have a particular structure to make it work. We could, for example, have a number of semi-independent forums with their own OT, meets, cleaning sections etc but I really think that would lead to a very insular outcome and border on being factional. In that instance it’d almost be worth having audismoke, ferrarismoke etc as separate sites.

Coming round to the Tyresmoke way of thinking, we all have our particular cars but we’re also united in a common appreciation of cars and all things motoring (well, we’d hope so – why else are you here?!?). So what we’ve done is address the former by providing separate sections where people can discuss their cars, ownerships, share technical information and problems. There’s also always a general section where general information on the marque is discussed. Tony you asked for a general section with a post IN the general section!! LOL A sense of camaraderie always builds in these model-specific sections – and anyway, you’re bringing your pre-packed community spirit with you so there’s no worries there 169144-ok.gif

Where it’s a bit different on Tyresmoke is that we take all of the things that are equally relevant to owners of all marques and that are not car specific and make them available centrally for all to use. So stuff like cleaning tips/experiences apply to everyone regardless of whether you drive a Ferrari or something good like an Audi S3 wink.gif hehe. The benefit here is that you get x times as much traffic and opinion in there and x times faster responses to questions as well as x times the breadth of opinion/response. Equally random musings and OT stuff is handled excellently by the Lounge of Joy (trust us, its addictive), similarly there’s a centralised In-car entertainment section because a headunit/sat nav/in car pc is the same no matter what car its in – and everyone gets the benefit of each other’s input across the whole of the Tyresmoke.

Leverage that Traffic!

For meets we have the Tyresmoke meets section (all of the sections are viewable in the main forum list but I’ve also posted quick links to key forums in the Ferrari welcome post) where you will find details of the regular Tyresmoke meets around the country as well as any other events/dates/meets of interest. You’ll all be made to feel very welcome if you pop along to any of the established monthly meets – they’re very informal and typically involve pub food, lots of admiring of cars and the chance to go out in people’s cars.

Equally, if you want to post up details of a Ferrari meet then that’s the place. There’s nothing to stop you organising it within the Ferrari forum but you’ll get a better attendance if there’s a corresponding post in the meets section. Its all about sharing the love!

In terms of splitting out into V8s and V12s – that’s not set in stone but we do think its important and helpful to have forums split out by model or model groups. From a housekeeping point of view it adds structure and makes things easier to find but its also key (we’ve found) to growing the userbase. For those of us (and hopefully you) who are already (or, hopefully, soon will be) accustomed to the way the forums work then finding posts is second nature. But we also get a great deal of traffic from passing users who find the site via Google etc. They might have a specific model-related buying or technical question, for example, and having the structure will help them to find what they need quickly. Equally we want the forums to appear logical and easy to use so that they will feel inclined to register and post, growing the community further and giving all of us more people to talk to.

So, taking a step back from all the ins and outs of how Tyresmoke is structured and looking at how it all fits in in practice we feel that the structure helps to make Tyresmoke the community that it is. I really believe we have a sense of community spirit across all forums that is second to none. We’ve been really fortunate in that whilst there’s lots of inter-make banter and in-jokes, everyone seems to get on with and help everyone and there isn’t any make-specific cliquey-ness or tension regardless of whether people drive an Enzo or a 1.gif. That’s what The Joy is all about.

I suppose what we’re saying is that to get the most out of the Tyresmoke experience we’d recommend that people read their model forums plus a few key others such as:

General Cars

News

Cleaning

Meets

Lounge of Joy

And then depending on interest, perhaps:

IT/AV

Sniff Petrol

Etc etc

The ‘Recent Posts’ button in the menu at the top of the page is a good way to keep track of what’s being talked about across the whole site.

I know its new/different, but give it a go, have a good rummage around the other forums, get a feel for the site and our users and see if you find The Joy.

If not, we’ll always listen and respond to any suggestions you have 169144-ok.gif

Cheers

Mollox

Sorry, that was quite a long post wasn't it tongue.gif

Following on from what I was saying, here's a quick sprinkling of current and classic posts from across the forums to give you an idea of what else is out there/the feel of the site etc smile.gif

“Investing in Rental Property, good or bad?” (The last one almost ended in a punchup)

“Amazing Karting Crashes”

"Which portable Sat Nav?"

"Pentagon Glasstech Review & Tyresmoke discount"

Here’s one way to manage FAQs:

“The A4 essential collection”

“2 Chinese chaps mimimg to the Back Street Boys” (From the ‘Rubber Room’ – comical)

and one of the best examples of meet organisation – ostensibly an A4/A4 Cab specific meet but open to all and it turned out to be a cracking day and a hilarious post 169144-ok.gif

“2005 A4/S4/Cab Meet”
