Milo
There are currently roadworks being carried out on the A1 near the Angel of the North. The majority of the area is long, straight sections of 2 and 3 lanes and a normal limit of 70 mph. The roadworks however are night time only. During the day, all the cones are removed from both carriageways (apart from one temporary set separating 2 lanes on the southbound side) and there is not a workman in sight. All day today though there has been a mobile camera parked in these roadworks probably picking people off for doing 56 in a 50 I spotted it at 9:30 going southbound. It was still on the southbound side at 11:30 and then when I went past again at 13:00, it was on the northbound side. It was still on the northbound side when I went past at about 14:15. WTF is there a need to have a speed camera on what is basically a long, straight, open, 3 lane road during the day when all the workmen it's there to protect are in bed? No-one will convince me camera postioning like this is anything other than a revenue generation exercise. Is it any wonder people get seriously pi$$ed off in this country with the Police for employing these sort of tactics? This is not a rant at the Police in general (so no offence meant Audi_Smitten ) but it really boils my p1ss [/and relax ]

NeilB
I don't see why SPEC's are not used on roadwork sections of motorways, there always bleating keep to the lowered speed limit while they are working. But they prefer to use GATSO's because they can rake more money in that way. Safety cameras my arse!
Milo
I've got no complaints about speed cameras in roadworks if it is felt necessary to protect the people who are working a few feet away from cars that would otherwise be doing 80-90 mph. But to sit there all day picking people off for maybe doing 56 in a temporary 50 limit on a dead straight, 3 lane section of road, when there aren't even any cones out never mind workmen, is protecting no-one. It's just an easy way to boost revenues while alienating even more of the public.

Sparky
I agree 100% Milo. They should be putting resouces into catching drivers which are careless, not the people who might speed occasionally, but overall, drive safely.

Mind you, the specs cameras all over the M1 near j21 Leicester have not stopped the recent fatalities there, workers get creamed if you hit them at 50 or 80 .... more planning is required regarding road layout and barriers, not just cameras ! cruiser647
They are not safety cameras. They are 'a moment in time' camera. At the wrong moment, you are doing 56 safely, in the wrong area. No danger to anyone. To catch BAD drivers, you need to use CCTV on the roads and watch people swerving or generally being stupid on the roads. THEN you can knab them. NewNiceMrMe
Milo, that mobile unit has been going to the same place for the last 6-8 months. It was there when the first stage of the roadworks began at the beginning of the year too. It's a typically devious location for a mobile unit. The roadworks themselves are 10 times more dangerous than any speeding motorist - especially as a number of us found out they have closed an exit route off with virtually no signage at all (except one tiny sign at the Angel that you can't see if you're in any lane other than the inside!
