Milo
I was pootling down the A1 today going to Newton Aycliffe (approx 30 miles away) doing about 60 mph when my ESP light came on. I pressed the button to see if it would go out but nope, it was on constantly. As I was only 5 miles away from where I wanted to be I thought I'd ignore it and call in to Audi on my way home. Half a mile later though the glow plug light started flashing . I was getting a bit concerned now so when I left the A1, I pulled in to check the handbook. It suggested that I had a fault with the ESP and a fault on the engine management system that needed "to be checked without delay". I pondered calling Audi Assist but thought as the car was still running OK I'd turn round and head for Newcastle Audi about 25 mile away. On the way back up the A1 I then started getting intermittent ABS warning lights and brake warning lights flashing "Oh feck" I'm thinking, this is not good. Anyway managed to make it back to Audi with my dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree although the car was still running fine. Spoke to the service desk who said they would get someone to look at it right away. So I took a seat, had a coffee and started on their ample supply of biscuits. Half an hour later, I get the tap on the shoulder. "All sorted Milo" they said, "both of your brake lights had blown!" Eh? They offered to change them for me but I declined. They then said they had done them anyway so wouldn't charge me for it (I could see the invoice already written out for £21 ish ). So it appears all the spurious warning lights etc had been a result of 2 blown brake bulbs (which I presume had blown together as they were both working last week). I found it hard to believe and politely asked to speak to the techie. He said they had hooked it up to VAG-COM and found nothing wrong. He said they replaced the bulbs and reset the warning lights and all seems fine. I then drove back to where I was originally heading to and back again with no problems Does this seem right because I can't make any sense of it. Has anyone else had anything else like this happen or is it just because it is Hallowe'en? As a footnote, I have to say once again the service side of Newcastle Audi were absolutely superb On the few occasions I have called on their services they have been brilliant and today was no exception. I was only there for 45 minutes in total and they replaced both brake bulbs free of charge and the car was returned to me washed and hoovered I would have rather they hadn't washed it as I'm a bit anal about protecting the paintwork but it wasn't very dirty anyway and I have checked it over and all seems fine. Top marks !! I have a story to tell about the sales side though but that's for another thread
Dusty
Sounds like it is one of those strange halloween occurences!!! not heard of anything like that before. Well done to Newcastle Audi though.... a little bit of good customer service can go a long way.
Sparky
Milo, I had this on my Bora. The techie could only assume by both brake lights blowing, that the change in resistance was enough to log a fault. I can't quite see that myself, but wasn't in the position to argue. I also had the glow plug light come on, which after calling out VW Assistance, found out that a 59p brake switch that controls both the brake lights and the fueling to the engine caused the light to come on and make the car limp home. Strange setup!
Milo
Phew, I'm pleased you've said that I was beginning to think maybe there was a serious problem that they had covered up or fixed and were spinning me a line. The techie was not very convincing when he was explaining it to me hence the paranoia

Rustynuts
Milo, for some reason, VAG decided to make the glowplug light flash to indicate a brake light bulb blown. As Sparky found out, it also flashes when the brake switch fails. However, for a petrol engined car (which doesn't have a glow plug light) I don't know what they decided to do. Milo
It's funny though as I've had brake lights off before without any warning lights. The ESP warning light was the first to come on then the glow plug light. The ABS and brake warning lights then intermittently flashed as I drove to Audi. Most unsettling I can tell you when you think you've broken something expensive
