Victoria BMW, Silverlink, North Tyneside

Earlier today I went out for a bit of CD/DVD shopping, to the Metro Centre.

Once finished, loaded with my 3 new DVD's and my 3-disc CD set I jumped into the 6 and loaded the CD's into the rather faffy 6-disc CD changer that sits in the glovebox.

You eject the cartridge, slot the CD's in and then struggle to get it back into it's housing. It's very awkward as the unit is set a good distance back in the glovebox.

Anyway, this done I set off.

As I descended the slip-road to join the A1 I hit the voice recognition button and announced "CD 1".

The lady replied "No CD 1 available".

Hmph. Ok, "CD 2".....you can guess what she said.

So I pulled off at the next junction , stopped and pressed the eject button on the CD Changer to see if I'd loaded them incorrectly.

Whirr, whirr, click, click...nothing....and again, and again, and again...it wouldn't eject.

I spent 15 minutes trying my best, restarting the car, holding the button in, hitting iDrive and so on...all to no avail.

Bugger.

So I drove straight to Victoria BMW at the Silverlink, unannounced. I asked at Service Reception if they could have a look at it there and then.

The Service Manager came out to the car within 5 minutes, during which time I grabbed myself a Cappuchino, and within seconds of getting in the car he said "Oh dear, it's had it".

"Sorry?" I said, "What do you mean?".

"It's ceased. It'll need complete removal and replacement of the Changer unit".

Aw hell I thought. No music for the rest of the day and then a delay in waiting for it to be booked in and fixed.

Oh no. "No problem", he said, "Get yourself another coffee and I'll put another unit in now, it'll take us 15 minutes".

I handed over the keys and the car was wheeled into the workshop where I watched (through the window) the ceased unit taken out, a box opened up and a brand new unit put in.

Just like that. No delays, no questions, no booking in, no hassle at all.

Top service from top blokes, yet again. 169144-ok.gif

You think it's at all related to spending many pennies with them?

I phoned BMW Preston Hall yesterday to ask if they could supply a key from my chassis, lock and key number. - The very rude to55er on the other end of the phone said they couldn't do it without me going down with proof of ownership, V5, photo ID and a tissue sample. So I hung up and gave the business to a local locksmith who charged £5, stayed open late for me to get there and was still very cheerful.

I've had 2 keys from Preston Hall previously, ordered by phone, collected in person with V5 and ID.

In the unlikely event of a lottery win, I'll have great fun making them run around in circles before taking my business to a respectable dealership that has the same level of service whether you've just spent £60k or 60p.

Well I won't be naive enough to say no, because I'm sure it is a factor.

However, Victoria (formerly Priory until recently) have always been good with me. I've had experiences with Mill, Fawdingtons and Preston Hall...and none of them compared favourably (and for Fawdingtons that is putting it mildly).

Aye, talking to myself is a bad sign!

I'm not bothered really. They've been excellent and have even said that the multichanger is a common fault on the 6 and 7-series. They reckon a new design is out early next year that they'll fit FOC but in the meantime they'll give me another new one that I just have to extra careful with when putting CD's in.

They're giving me a lift home and then delivering the car back to me so I can't complain.
