jagseven
I had planned to get a manual R32 having tried a manual and DSG equipped Golf GTI. The DSG was very impressive but I enjoyed the extra control of the manual. Now my dealer has driven the car and has just called me to say I must get the DSG as it is brilliant - he reckons it suits the R32 even better than the GTI due to the extra power and engine note. So now I'm thinking maybe I should get the DSG.......what are others thinking of getting? Obviously a long test drive in each would be best but this may not be easy to arrange if I want a car as soon as possible.
TP27
No DSG for me thanks. Dealer is encouraging me the same way so decision made!
RedRobin
Have a read of the threads on the DSG subject in the GTI forum. I wouldn't say one is better than the other but only that the DSG goes way further than any automatic. You simply have to test drive to decide what suits you better and not only read the posts. Mook
It depends how you drive. Having the manual option with the DSG is the best compromise i.m.o. because you can drive it like a lazy git on the motorway and in town/traffic jams, then use it like it's intended on the twisty bits. As long as they've modified the software that automatically kicks it down a gear about 10 seconds too soon when it's in Sport mode. This was the only thing that put me off the A3 3.2Q DSG before I bought the R32. That and the "exclusivity" of the Mk4 R32, although that has gone out of the window with the Mk5... nicks3
I've ordered a DSG R32.
RedRobin
I actually like that DSG S-mode eagerness....I don't know if it's different for the Mk5 R32....I'll report the difference between GTI and R32 (both Mk5) Sports modes after my R32 test drive (assuming it's DSG). Btw, I appreciate your Remembrance Poppy avatar .
BURTON
There is a gear changing system that is better than DSG, SMG and F1 style in the Italian cars.. Its called... A MANUAL GEARBOX!!! For fun and ease DSG is good but once the fun factor has worn off you will get bored of it!
RedRobin
So, have you had a car with DSG and then got bored with that aspect of it? There are times when I miss a manual but then the paddles are great fun and much much faster and more reliable than any conventional manual change. I don't miss a manual when in town or heavy traffic jams....Quite the contrary in those circumstances. But anyway, I'm not saying one is 'better' than the other and you obviously prefer Manual. I only hope you are talking from actual experience of DSG though.
robin09
I think DSG is cheating. But then again I am a bit of a Luddite.
Mook
[ QUOTE ] I think DSG is cheating. [/ QUOTE ] So does that mean that all of the F1 and Rally drivers are cheating as well?
