Remote Keys info

Hello and welcome to TSN. smile.gif

If I remember rightly, the remotes can be programmed up fairly easily, the procedure might be in the manual. If not, it's something as simple as unlocking the car with an existing key, opening the driver's door and holding the unlock button on the remote for several seconds, then locking the car. It's been a while since I had to program any keys up, so it's very unlikely to be that exact procedure, but remember it being quite simple.

Pop in to the A8 forum and somebody there might be able to help with an exact procedure. 169144-ok.gif

Hmmm, the ebay auctions going about at the moment all seem to be for 8Z0 or 4D0 part numbers, and I can't see any for 8ZT part numbers. You could keep searching ebay for a remote key that starts with 8ZT.

You could also try the folks at http://www.vagparts.co.uk/ and see if they can get hold of one, otherwise it might be the delaer, I'm afraid.

Hi, have an A6 Avant with only one key and looked into this as I'm skint. You can buy another remote key from EBay have the blade cut to fit the door lock (to open the car door manually) & ignition and you can do the locking/unlocking bit with the new key to reprogram your new key to unlock the car door remotely. However none of this will enable the key to start the car. All the keys, whether remote ones or not, have a liitle chip in them that is coded and the cars computer reads the keys code when its put in the ignition and if the codes right it allows the car to start. If its not the car won't start. Its a security thing so you can't nick the car by driving it away without the owners key. Only a dealer can reprogramme the keys chip and cars computer so that the car knows the key. This involves taking your old and new keys to a dealer who then plug into the cars computer, get a code out of it, send that to Audi in Germany who send back another code which enables your dealers to reprogram both your keys and the cars computer so that they all 'know' each other. I know this as I'm just on my way to Audi now to get my new spare key. I ordered a new non remote key from Audi, one that will open the door manually and start the car (in case I ever lose my only remote one) It cost approx £50 to buy the key from them and another £30 in labour for a mechanic to reprogramme everything. I needed to take my V5, passport and a utility bill to the dealer who then ordered the key (it comes cut from a place they get them from in Milton Keynes as they store all of the key blade patterns there for every UK Audi)which took about 3 days then I have to take the car to the dealer for the reprogramming (should take about 15 mins) If theres a cheaper/easier way I couldn't find it then but I'm not too clever anyhow. I was told a new remote key can also be ordered this way too but it would have cost about £150 plus reprogramming. Hope that helps.

hit the nail on the head there a6steve. I've done loads of research on this topic and came to the sam econclusion. I did get a remote and cut blade off ebay, coded it to open doors but am still to get down the dealers to sort the coding out. This did save me approx £100 on the price of a new remote from Audi though.
