doogal1972
Just wondering if any of you guys could give me some advice about a problem I'm having with my S3? What's happening is sometimes if you come off and on the power I get a delay on power delivery which was similar to the MAF sensor not working properly. I've changed that and it's still doing it. Any idea what it could be? Just feels like the boost isn't working properly and sometimes feels intermitant with it's delivery. It doesn't always do it but it is noticable. After changing the MAF sensor I thought I'd cured it but it appears not. If any of you guys could shed any light on this probelm it would be much appreciated!! S3ENVY
I had a very similar problem on my S3, changed the MAF first and all was ok for a week, then it came back. Turned out to be a faultly timing chain tensioner solenoid, causing incorrect valve timing. Had it repaired under warranty and all is good now. Would've cost £900 to get sorted by dealer though, hope you're isn't the same, could be something else very simple, knackered DV, hole in one of your hoses maybe? doogal1972
Nooooooooooooooo! With my luck it will definately be the 900 quid job mate! Already had a waterpump go and blew head gasket! that was a grand! Haven't had the car 6 months yet! 2002 Facelift S3 with 40k on it. Man, I have no luck with cars! Thanks for the advice mate, I'll stick it in the garage and see what happens. What'll probably happen is I get a fat bill for 900 quid!
doogal1972
I've just phoned AMD and I'm going for a diagnostic, and then probably a RR set up. That ought to find out what it is. Fingers crossed!!
Simonl
is it remapped
doogal1972
No, it's a standard facelift 210ps. Amd are doing a diagnostic tomorrow morning. I'll be praying for a split hose or something that isn't going to cost me limbs!!
S3ENVY
Yeah, mine is a 2002 facelift with 26k on it. How did you manage to blow the head-gasket, thought those engines were meant to be bullit-proof?
doogal1972
Waterpump failed and cooked the lot on a hot day while I was giving a bit of wellie! 1.8T water pump....you are the weakest link....goodbye! What happens is the impeller/propeller thing comes loose and falls off. It's plastic and just breaks. Apparently the fix is to drill a little hole in it and fit a grub screw to stop it coming off. The whole reason I went for the S3 was because of the apparently bullet proof engine. I've learned a lot since then...........nothing is bullet proof! Had the car 6 months and it has cost me a fortune! If it carries on like this I'll be on me p.s. I bought it with 38k on the clock, hardly a lot of miles! Simonl
[ QUOTE ] I bought it with 38k on the clock, hardly a lot of miles! [/ QUOTE ] depends if they're hard city miles or not. My mate had a corrado that cost him 14k to put right, and it was still feckin up when he sold it. Some cars are just cursed IMO
doogal1972
Cursed car or drivers? I had a Corrado too, head went on that twice! Oh, and my brand new Mini Cooper S I bought had 6k's worth of warranty repairs in 2.5 years! This may sound like I'm to blame but I actually look after my cars, I just get ones! doogal1972
AMD have just phoned me back with the results of the diagnostic. No fault codes whatsoever, rolling road preduced the standard power curve it should be and they can't find a thing wrong with it?? I know I'm not imagining it so what could the problem be? Maybe it's a characteristic of my car? Who knows really. They're going out for another road test in it now to double check it and they'll phone me back. At least if there's nothing wrong with it, I get peace of mind even though I've just paid for it. Cars eh? Don't you just love em!!
S3ENVY
Geeez!!! You said it was intermittent though right? When my MAF played up it produced codes but was still faulty, I'm on my third now after having a bad one straight out of the box! I'm sure you'll sort it... doogal1972
AMD said the MAF was working fine, which means it probably didn't need replacing anyway! This may sound a bit dumb, but I reckon it could be turbo lag which is more apparent the higher the gear and revs. I'm not used to lag as my last car was supercharged. It could be that I suppose, if it is I'm gonna feel a right tit! Oh well, live and learn I suppose.
S3ENVY
Maybe it is turbo lag! However you're only going to get that below roughly 2500rpm. It is a less linear power delivery compared to your supercharged engine and if it turns out that your car is performing as it should, maybe a remapping is in order!!! I'm off to AmD next Saturday to have a geometry set-up. Might have mine RR'd because mine has a life of it's own sometimes too.
doogal1972
It could well be just turbo lag. As now I've got used to the car and I'm pushing it a bit more, maybe it's something that I didn't really notice that much before. I'd love to remap my car, just scares the out of me because of my eternal bad luck with motors. If I remap, my car will fcuk. That's how I see it, maybe a bit paranoid. Also, remap would mean even more turbo lag!! More boost = more lag. Did you see topgear when the tested that 400 brake Evo? When not on the boost it was dog slow, extreme case I know. You can't beat raw naturally aspirated power, or supercharging IMHO. Hope it goes well at AMD for you mate.
DHA
Remap doesn't necessarily mean more lag. My S3 had a REVO chip and it didn't gain any lag. Just the boost coming in was more prenounced over standard. But there is very little lag in the S3 compared to some other turbo charged cars.
