Cattlerustler
Does anyone know the minimum brakepad thickness on an R32? I need to stick a rocket up my dealers backside, I have 3-4mm of brake pad left and they are trying suggest they are 50% worn, now 50% worn to me is 50% of the available material between new and minimum thickness or maybe I'm wrong? Whats everybody's thought? The biggest issue is that the sensor hasn't come on yet but the passenger side is not worn as much as the drivers Does anyone have a proper service manual who could scan the page and email it to me? Many thanks Adrian
Skidmark
Info in manual says min of 2mm for front & back cheers
mulkbear
Most dealer will advise customers when there pad is 50% worn at service time because normaly 50% will not last too next service. Personly i would say 3-4mm is around 60% worn. New pads 10mm Min pads thinkness 2mm 4mm = 50% Remeber your vehcle is a high performace vehicle and should be treated as such, Brakes should not be left to wear to the minium thickness
Cattlerustler
Thanks for the replies so far, if new is 10mm and minimum is 2mm then there is 8mm of wear as mine are 4mm minus 2 for minimum I have 2mm of wear left that is 25% of the available wear. I really want them to change the pads but they seem reluctant as VW have to pay for them due to the service and maintenance package I have, seems odd to me as they don't pay directly. They topped up the brake fluid today as the warning light had been coming on to say it was low, this to me was a sure sign the pads were screwed, ho hum...... I will have to pop in and see the service manager tomorrow for a little chat. Thanks again
Mook
The last 3mm of any brake pads are for dispersing heat, not for braking - this doesn't just apply to the R32. It's a basic rule of auto-engineering. If your pads are worn unevely, then they need to be looked at. IIRC, the cost of a set of pads for the R32 is £75, so whether they're paying for them now or in a couple of weeks shouldn't make any difference to your maintenance agreement. Golfgirl
Last time my car was serviced the dealers tried to convince me that the brake pads only had 3,000 miles left in them and that they wouldn't last until the next service. My b/f works for Ford and took the car to work to have a look at them whilst it was on the ramps. They weren't even a third worn!! They lasted a further 11,000 miles including 3 track days and a long weekend at the Nurburgring! Each time my car gets serviced they find something that "needs" doing when it doesn't! Trying to take advantage of a female on her own me thinks. Unfortunately this female has common sense and just ignores them and gets a second opinion
mulkbear
It is very strange for a dealer to be reluctant change pads when a vehicle is on a service plan at my dealer normaly we will "rape" a car when it is on a service plan i.e. when the pads are worn replace the disc's as well because we get pay for them by VW
Mook
[sarcasm]Oh how encouraging it is to know that dealers are prepared to rape a car, just to get paid by VW. That comment makes me want to rush to my nearest dealer, totally useless as they are, and ask them to replace everything they can...[/sarcasm] There are some things you should keep to yourself Mulkbear
Calm Chris
Nah, He's only being honest and telling us the truth. Anyway, since it's at no cost to the car owner and they end up with everything being replaced early, whats wrong with that?

Woppum
The first set of pads I changed were virtually new after about 7000 miles! The dealer told me they were 75% worn....
