Focus ST v Golf GTI v Astra VXR

The review in Evo magazine of the new Focus ST is very interesting too, but it ends with this gem:

[ QUOTE ]

just when you want it to throw off its sensible shoes and goad you in to really going for it, the ST gets a little sulky, a little detached. The Golf GTI remains the benchmark.

Must say i have never agreed with the motoring press bias opinions of cars and often prefered the ones they suppose hated at the time when they were new, but sometimes they change there minds when they talk about the same cars secondhand a few years down the track and do a 100 degree turn about on there original views on them I wonder why that is lol. wink.gif

The GTI is a good car but not 100% perfect and i can pick more faults than just the back bumper. Rear vision is one as is the huge doors on the 3 door if parking in small parking spaces at supermarkets getting in and out is not easy, excess tyre noise on some road surfaces, Some cheap plastics on parts of the interior, alloys without a rim protector or tyres without the same, just to name a few and i can come up with far more, and i bet after a few years all these coments creap up in reviews in magazines and more.

I have never been a fan of Fords but must say in resent years they have come on leaps and bounds and i do find the ST in more sedate colours quite interesting especially due to the 5 pot noise and availabe as a 5 door. The astra im not too sure of myself mainly the looks still not sure but i guess different strokes for different fokes.

Er, alloys without rim protectors!? no alloy has a rim protector, either it has an edge for knock on weights or it uses stick on weights. Tyres can have rim protectors , not alloys, the cars with bridgestone tyres have some rim protection, mine does, but it really won't stop it if you do drive into the kerb. If you wanted smaller doors you could have had a 5 door. No car is perfect , it's a trade off, if hyou want handling, grip and traction you end up with wider tyres, = noise , it's hardly a failing of the GTI, just of cars with wider/low profile tyres.

Your correct i ment was a rim on the alloy, As that helps reduce the HUGE marks that others have shown already on here with alloys that don't have it. Also some tires have rim protectors.

As i said I could pick more faults than the magazine simply could not find i was comenting on the magazine review here and what they said. The doors are huge and thick on the 3 door worse than some rivals and so harder to get out of in small spaces. Oh and i know you can get a 5 door i have one tongue.gif . No car is perfect your correct but some things would be so simple to cure but they never seem to do it.

[/ QUOTE ] Actually thats an often misunderstood subject but i will not go into that here.. Noise has many more factors than just the tire width. NVH, suspension design, body design, noise supression etc etc etc. Thats why not all cars with the same make, model of tyre have the same interior noise or even same frequency Hz of noise.

[/ QUOTE ]

So is the Golf confused.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Sorry to have confused you i was comenting on how the ST was also available as a 5 door as well as the GTI as been a good thing were as some of its rivals as discussed in that review ie Corrola and VXR are only 3 door.

My bad wording of my post. beerchug.gif

RedRobin

What I was trying to say is I hope I like the VXR Astra more as I get discount, but to be honest I think my mind is made up and its going to be the GTI for the simple fact it has the DSG gear box, which I cannot get over how good it is. I have been working out how much more it would cost for the R32!!, but my limit is 25k. And like you said enjoy life while you can.

why not import an R32? I think you can get it for 21.5k from Select Automotive (there's a thread about them going on) - and all the options will be significantly less. Add 850 for DSG, and most other options are heavily reduced (up to 60% off)

my GTi is coming from them, and am in the last week or two of waiting. A couple of us on here have cars coming from them. I don't work for them by the way - but it was by people talkign about them on this forum that I heard about them, and subsequently cancelled an order I had and made one with them

Oh dear!! I wish you hadn't said that mu! I find that the new R32 keeps preying on my mind and I know that I would defo consider it in the future. It's the 4WD and V6 sound which so attracts me but I don't like the extra cost, the alloys, or its exhaust styling as much as my (modified rear) GTI. Importing would significantly help the cost. At the end of the day I really love what I've got and I'll just keep an open mind. There's always something 'bigger'/'better' available. My liquid cooled dual processor Mac has just been superceded by a new dual core version! I don't need it and I'm very lucky to have what I have....A roof over my head and food in my belly and no need to work any more.

Mu, didn't you lose your deposit when you cancelled with VW?

well I didn't actually have the order with VW, but with another importer (allbrandsnew), so I only lost £250.

The VW dealer was so rubbish that I didn't even make a second visit.

Had a look at the options list at Select yesterday whilst I was typign that post, and even I was wondering why I didn't add things like leather/18s/xenons (£1000/£300/£600). But then I remembered I had a budget to stick to.....

Some good reviews of both the Astra VXR and the Focus ST on the Parkers website. They appear to dislike the Astra for the usual reasons (too much power, not enough control), but think that the ST is a very, very good car...

Oh, and as with all Parkers reviews they have tons of really good photos of the cars -- inside, outside, close-up details, etc.

Maybe I'm missing something, but this is how they sum up the VXR

[ QUOTE ]

The VXR badge is finally applied to perhaps the most important model within the Vauxhall line-up, going head to head with the Golf GTi and the forthcoming Ford Focus ST. It builds upon the undeniable good looks of the Sport Hatch with a more pronounced bodykit, a central exhaust tailpipe and big chunky alloy wheels. It's party piece is bountiful, exuberant thrust courtesy of its turbocharged engine. It is a very fast car although it takes concentration to drive it to its maximum potential. The Golf GTi is more mature in it's behaviour but not as quick - in a straight line at least. There's plenty to like about the VXR if you don't mind a bit of unruliness.

[/ QUOTE ]

Hardly not liking it smashfreakB.gif

I want something a bit unrully and not soft like the GTI, but as everyone says, its each to their own. I'm not into scones and cream teas whereas the you can spot many a GTI at the vicarage in the afternoon parked up for theirs jump.gif

Got to buy my burbery at the weekend, but I've bought my VXR for nearly 4k less than my old MKV GTI, so I can afford it lol.gif

....It's Burberry not burbery. Burberry and the VXR do match each other rather well don't they.
