AntW
what a great idea, heres hoping they become widespread (meaning replacing existing ones - not everywhere!)
Ritey
Would still be a nightmare for emergency services
Neimad
Fantastic idea, but I think they should also build in some form of override so that emergency vehicles (read: Ambulances) can deactivate them as they approach. If it does what it claims to, i.e. eliminate stop-start traffic, reduce fuel consumption, and reduce damage to vehicles/their occupants then it can only be a good thing. Philbes
Most of the speed bumps that I encounter cannot be driven over at the speed limit - it is necessary to reduce speed to below the speed limiit. My Accord is not low nor does it have hard suspension. Surely speed limits shoud at least allow a 'standard' car to travel at the speeed limit or are they deliberately designed to reduce traffic speeds to well below the speeed limit? Pidge
Did you read the article? "The Transcalm humps, which have been successfully tested in the City of London, deflate regardless of speed for emergency vehicles. "
silentandy
Great idea, wonder how easy they would be to puncture though.

Rich
What happens if they malfunction, happily driving a long doing the speed limit, then the hump inflates to maximum size........
mmj
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Did you read the article? "The Transcalm humps, which have been successfully tested in the City of London, deflate regardless of speed for emergency vehicles. " [/ QUOTE ] How exactly do they tell the difference between a police car and a regular car? [/ QUOTE ] Maybe emergency vehicles are fitted with a transponder that communicates with traffic signals and this uses the same system? They sound too good to be true. The councils around here love speed bumps. There is a long wide section of road that was recently resurfaced locally and cars do tend to whiz up and down. Which a large school is directly located off (ironically a Police Station too)Just as the tarmac hardened, they then put these bumps or mounds in, which can be just about driven over without much effect if you place your wheels each side. The only trouble is that there is a row of three, which means drivers in both directions aim for the middle hump... Now as much as I dislike speed, sorry (safety) cameras... why don't they just put a bloody camera here instead of all the humps and meaningless road markings (there was also a few spare tins of road paint lying around the council depot too!)
