Sparky
When I leave the house in the morning, I often put my window down to clear any rain-water on the side windows, and when reversing, I really can smell the car. It appears to really chuck some crap out, and sometimes I can see white smoke. It's the 1.9 TDi (130) engine and I've had to put 2 litres of oil in 16,000 miles into it. This never did this when new, and it's due a service in 100 miles. Could it just be waiting for the service, or is this something I need to get checked? It's certainly more than I'm used to seeing. Any advice?
UBM
It could be some water vapour if it is white which has collected in the exhaust pipe? I must admit, when I start mine, I can smell that lovely diesel aroma, but don't notice excessive smoke. Hoever, the last few days I have set off and can see the exhust gases rising vertically from the zorsts in the rear view mirror. I think it might just be the level of water vapour and temperature of the atmosphere.
Sparky
It is getting colder, and I am noticing it more, but the smell is usually one I link to oil being burnt off and I don't remember it doing that before. Seems a new thing.
lmmlmmam
Burning Oil gives blue smoke not white. If it is white smoke and not water vapour, that could indicate incomplete combustion resulting from a glow plug problem. Worth getting the dealer to look at it. Sparky
Well I wasn't going to mention it was also blue - as the last time I did that, a techy told me I was speaking But it does both - not at the same time though! It wants a service in 100 miles (which means tomorrow then!), so I'll mention that. Is there any other signs that would indicate a glow plug problem? lmmlmmam
Comparitively (better say that to stop Chav pointing out that rough is standar), rough running for the first few seconds. Your oil consumption doesn't sound that bad (c.f what some on here have suffered).
Sparky
Hmmm, well it sounds rougher (doesn't feel it though), and within seconds has dulled to a much smoother diesel rumble than when first ignition is on. I just know that unless I do some digging, Audi will dismiss it!
bradw
white smoke can also imply a poorly turbo.
Durrsaku
2 l of oil in 16k miles seems a bit much. Its been a year and 10k miles later i havent had to use any and i know your car is a lot newer than mine. This might not be connected though. Durrsaku
Your driving style could affect it too: heavy foot/light foot? Check for any oil leaks:/crank seals/turbo seals/valve cover gasket etc. Excessively clogged injectors? But then this will result in low compression. Sparky
No oil leaks anywhere - or at least none that I can see. I do push it. I'm not quite as bad as Milo made out, but it doesn't hang about. It drives well with no performance issues that I can detect.
Milo
Me? I never said a thing To be honest I don't think you've got a problem. All diesels, mine included, seem to like to clear their tubes first thing when you start them. If it was chucking smoke out all the time when you were driving, or excessive smoke everytime you accelerated I would be worried. Get Audi to check it over but I wouldn't be overly concerned
